check engine light is on... what to do?

I have an 03 protege speed and the check engine light came on a few days ago. I have been driving the car daily and everything seems to be normal, shifting fine, clutching fine. I'm not sure what the problem is....

huh? can you post a picture? if you have a mazdaspeed protege, there is no transmission light? (or do you mean "Check Engine" light?)

It's an amber colored light on left hand side of the speedomete,r it doesn't say "check engine" just a picture with the word check under it. I bought the car last fall and did not drive it much during the winter. Ive been driving it for the last month or so with no problems. I do not have a manual/book for the car so i have no idea what the light is, I assumed it was transmission.

thats the check engine light. get the code (if you dont have a reader, i might suggest getting a cheap one from walmart) and post back.

Go to Sears, they will tell you what the check engine light means without having to buy a code reader.

Wow so many new people, how about you post your location and see if someone is close that has a scanner. I have one and would be happy to scan it for you and let you know what it could be.

Get it taken care of. If it is a misfire or something that sends unburnt fuel into your exhaust you might damage your catalytic converter. The sooner you take care of it the better.

btw if your MSP is driving normal than there is definitely a problem! lol
