Cheap damn keys!!! - Duplicate (sorry)

Got our new Mazda5 a little over a week ago and I already have a broken key fob!! The part that the keyring attaches to has just snapped off. It turns out that the shiny chrome like piece that holds the keyring to the fob is PLASTIC!

What bonehead engineers came up with that idea??

Has anyone else had similar issues?

First of all Don't spam the group with your posting. Once is enough. :-)

and nope, not had any issues. but then again all I have attached to my fob is the Key for my CLUB and the radio fob for Esso's quick pass system.

Relax buddy, it was inadvertent - the system was not uploading my post. Kept trying (as you can see), then low and behold all the attempts ended up being posted.

Broken Key Fob

Will this be replaced under warranty?
If not, what will you do?
Anthony

As long as there are no signs of neglect (ie, it has deep scratches like it was dropped on pavement or indications of water damage) then yeah, they should replace that for ya free of charge doesnt mean they will.

FWIW, its pretty much an isolated case I think. Ive never heard of this happening before.

I've put in a call to the dealership - They'd better replace it, if not I can see myself losing that fob in no time.

I'll update once I have a response.

these keys suck dont they. I always wondered if that plastic piece would break off...i guess you answered that question. My problem lately has been the remote. i had to remove the cover to bend the connectors so that they would stay in contact with the battery. FYI the components inside the remote are made by Mitsubishi...my 2nd fav car company
:P

The real kicker is this:

Other mazda keys have a METAL chrome peice that the ring slips into.

That, and the 5 fob is THE MOST EXPENSIVE FLIP KEY FOB there is!!!

That said, just under normal use even MINE is starting to wear and chip.

And the other fob's pieces aren't swapable. Different design altogether.

One of the joys of ownership i guess.

Hmmm...in my 15 months of ownership I haven't had a single problem with my fob other than the lock/unlock images wearing off.
