Change the tires/rims on Mazda5

I have a 06 Mazda5 and I personally think that the low profile tires suck! They wore out at 19,000 miles and now I've been informed that my newer tires can no longer be rotated because all my rims are bent (from potholes). My steering wheel vibrates because of this too! To fix the rims, I'd have to spent $480 and I would, but they'll just get bent again. I do not know why low profile tires were put on this car. It's a mini-van! Does anyone know if I can put different sized tires/rims on this vechile that are not low profile...like instead of the 205/50/17 can I replace the 50 with 60? I honestly have NO clue! Please, any and all help is appreciated. THANK YOU!

We all have this car because it's a sporty mini-van, you are the first person who own a Mazda5 that i see complain about that. if you put bigger tires you will have to put smaller wheels, just take a look at this site and try to find a good combo to keep your speedometer working.

Your tires (if you have a GT) = 205/50R17

From the UK brochure:
195/65 R15 for 15"x6" wheels
205/55 R16 for 16"x6.5" wheels
205/50 R17 for stock North American 17"x6.5" wheels

Beware, that in the UK, the smaller wheels are reserved for base models with 15" disc brakes (278mm front/280mm rear vs. 300mm front/302mm rear) It is most likely that the 15" WILL NOT fit our cars. They also offer 2 size spares: The 15" brakes have a T115/70 D15 while the 16" brakes have a T125/70 D16. I would use the spare your 5 comes with as a guide to the brake diameter, and thus the smallest actual wheels you can use.

Looks like both Sport and Touring cars in Mexico come with 16" wheels standard. Guess 16s will most likely be your best replacement. (cheaper than 17s to replace, and some with better treadwear ratings, too)

GS models here in Canada have stock 16 inch wheels. you can search it here, look for in the snow tire threads a lot of guys are using 16's for snows.

I don't agree that low profile tires in the Mazda5 suck, but that is off-topic I guess :D

I assume you are in the US, so just look for tires and wheels that fit the Mazda3i (16in) and you should be fine. Just before you buy ask the seller (web, phone) to confirm your purpose.

Some of the Canadian fellows here have 16in wheels and the OEM tire is all-season 205/55, so that should do the job.

While a higher profile 17in tire may give you some extra ride comfort and less wheel rash risks it won't make it a radical difference and if it's to high you may actually end up with minor discrepancies on mileage and speed readings....

I went with the 215/50/17s when I replaced the stock tires a couple of years ago.

That is the size I reccommend anyone going to when replacing the OEM tires.

Good info here:
195/65 R15 for 15"x6" wheels
205/55 R16 for 16"x6.5" wheels
205/50 R17 for stock North American 17"x6.5" wheels

But I'm still amazed that someone doesn't like the 17" stock Mazda5 wheels. They look pretty darn good for being stock and the ride is alright too. But alas, I went with 18" RX8 rims so what do I know (drive2)
