Center Console Removal! Help!

:
2002 Mazda Protege5
I've searched and I've searched and I can't find anything on how to get this sucker out! I don't know if you should pull or if it's screwed in there or anything. I wanna get it off so I can paint it, but I'm so paranoid about breaking things I don't wanna just go at it. Help please!

Two screws on the sides up in the front, then slide the front seats forward and two screws there.. pop off the plastic around the shifter although for manual tranny it wouldn't really be necessary.. pull off the trim around the e-brake though I don't think you can get the console out with it there.. then just pull it towards the back of the car, it'll sorta unclip from the centre console and then you just maneuver it out. I've done it a few times when I'm doing a really thorough cleaning or something, it's not too bad.

Which part are you talking about? I'm talking about the piece with the heat/AC controls and the radio and the two vents on top.

that one is easy, just PULL, stick your fingers in the 2 top vent areas and pull on the bezel, once it is loose, you will have to remove the 2 A/C wires from around back of the unit, and it should pop right off
check the howto section on the A/C LED change or even a stereo swap, should be straight forward...

I'm having the same problem as he is. i have two metal wires for the vents and hot/cold knob, every time i try to take it out it stops me and not enough room to get a good look at what needs to be done. that link didnt do much help for me, just took me to sit to site.

The two metal wires control the vent blend doors for temperature and blower location. For the driver's side, follow the cable from the front to a spot roughly where your right knee is at when you're driving. There should be a plastic peg the cable is slipped around. Push on the protruding part of the peg and pull the cable loop off of the peg.

For the passenger side, it's easiest to pull the glove box. The box is simply held in place by tension, so squeeze the box together at the top and it will come free from the stops. Then pull it free from the plastic at the bottom gently. After that, you should be able to see the metal cable with a similar plastic peg. Same story for removal on this side as well.

A couple of notes, try to remember the routing of the cable through the dash. Also, there are metal clips that keep the cable shielding (it's black) in place and provide support for the cable. The cable simply slides out from those tabs, but pulling on them too hard can damage them. There should be one on each side just before the plastic peg.
