CEL question on MS6

:
MSP & MS3
I'm looking at a used MS6...

It has a CAI, BOV & custom exhaust. The dealer said he cannot sell it until it passes emmisions. He's convinced that the CAI or BOV is causing the CEL. I told him it most likely has to do with the exhaust...

What do you guys think? Is it possible that it's the CAI or BOV? I'm thinking he needs to take the exhaust out and replace it with a stock setup.

Well, you are already fighting an uphill battle:

The CAI can throw a CEL, but, after viewing on this forum for a year, I have not heard of any intake (CP-E, AEM, Mazdaspeed, Injen) throwing a CEL on these cars. You could disconenct the battery for 10 minutes, and see if that takes off the light, but the, it could come back on at any time.

The BOV could be throwing the CEL if it is venting to atmosphere, instead of recirculating the air back into the intake.

And, the exhaust. If it is a Cat-back exhaust, the CEL is not due to this. HOWEVER, if there is a new downpipe put on, this could be the cause of the CEL.

Now, no matter what it is, to ensure you are buying a good car, ask the dealer to run a diagnostic check. If this is not a Mazda dealer you are dealing with, ask them to take it to a Mazda dealer, and get a printout of what the diagnostics say. That is the only way of knowing exactly what the problem is, without putting back on all the stock parts. Tell the dealer you want this done for free, and that you reserve the right to withhold buying the car until this problem is addressed.

Ya, you've gotta find out what the CEL code is for.

If the car has a downpipe, it could be because of that.
