Catless midpipe vs Catted midpipe???

The one horsepower gain for the test pipe is OVER the High Flow catted mid-pipe, not over stock cat and mid-pipe...

Well originally I wasn't wondering if one or the other would supplie more HP but if anyone had any complaints or problems with catless midpipes. Any performance probelems, etc.

#1 reason/problem/difference is sound level...straight exhaust will be LOUD!!! and I don't think LOUD is worth 1 whp gain....

You can also throw in how it is obvious to cops when you have straight exhaust on your car which is a ticketable offense and actually a federal crime, or how it doesn't filter the emissions at all, or that is annoyingly loud and obnoxious for your neighbors and fellow drivers... I'm just an old fart tho...

There are so many different combinations of exhaust pieces. You add one piece it's to loud so you change another piece to make it quieter and soon you have a combobulation of OBX/MAM/Magnaflow/HKS/CorkSport/Mazda OEM/Thermal/Thunder/Tsudo/AWR/etc. etc. etc. Just figure out which pieces make your exhaust louder and which ones are nice. For example a catless MAM piece alone won't make your exhaust that loud. Then you will change out the headers and catback and be like "damn thats" loud. So you change the catback to a quieter catback. It's still make a rice buzzing noise, so you change the midpipe out for a catted one. Now it's not as deep as you wanted, so you change the headers. It's too loud again so you go back to the last headers and you change out the catback, but it's buzzing even more so you change out the catback for a catback and axle back and now you get popping sounds from backfire.

Just save yourself the time and think out your exhaust system ahead of time with quality parts and do it all in one shabang and if you think a part is going to be too loud then go for the quieter option, because with exhaust ultimately it's about a gigantic metal noise maker and on a protege5 you can just ignore power benefits and losses.

To answer your question more specifically, yes I have heard the MAM catless and several exhaust setups.

Well does anyone have any sound clips of a catted midpipe with headers and axel-back?

pn posted this video in post #11 and it doesnt sound that loud but he has a high flow catted midpipe with headers and mazdaspeed axleback. I can't imagine that a catless midpipe would be much louder than a catted:

But anywhoo I guess the only negative aspect of a catless is noise and attention from cops, but if you got the right catback that could be remideed.

My old set up was an AWR header, CAI, MAM catless midpipe and a full Magna-Flo cat-back. I was scared to drive it because it was so loud. Now I have a K & N drop in filter, AWR header, MAM catless midpipe, stock P-5 cat-back system and MP3 ECU. I really like the sound now.
If you are getting oil blow by, try this. http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=63580&highlight=pvc+valve
I put one of these on at the same time as the mid pipe, and I never have had any problems.

peep this..

It does sound like an auto. hehe The video makes it sound lower than it actually was. But, yea you are correct. I think it was in about the 4000 to 4500 rpm range. But I was in 2nd gear. My car has 100000 miles on it, so I take it easy. I just want to go out and have fun and not blow up my car. hehe

Well bang for buck which is more beneficial, generally speaking, between a header and a midpipe? I know on our cars you aren't going to see a lot of gain, but which would relieve the most restriction between the two?

well i just took off my mam catted midpipe, its alot quieter but i miss the burble/backfire

ok well i got the obx headers and the race beat cat back a lot of people have been telling me if i want more power the go with a high flow cat is that true or no?
