catback exhaust - worth it?

i'm thinking about buying a Magnaflow catback exhaust system for my p5 but then i started having doubts about its worthiness...

with its 2.25" tubing, will it make any appreciable difference to my engines responsiveness, hp, and power (seeing that i'll probably stay n/a)? what is the p5's stock exhaust tubing anyway? is it crush or mandrel-bent?

apparently the magnaflow catback adds +8.1hp & +10.2tq at the wheels (so says magnaflow). probably less than that, eh?

if there is no appreciable difference, i might just go for an axle-back muffler instead and save myself some $$$ for other things.

comments? thanks.

In the future please use the search. Discussions and reviews about exhaust systems are as common here as fish in the sea. But to answer your question. They are definitely worth it. The stock muffler is quite restrictive. You will definitely feel it when you put a new system on. I noticed mostly an increase in torque and throttle response.

ps: yeah, i'm usually also someone who tells people to use the search function on the other boards i'm on :) but i had to run out of the house to do a whole lot of errands and i couldn't spend the time in front of the computer searching through post after post. i needed a decision tonight and i got it!

thanks!

i dont' think it's worth it. it costs so much money, and the most you'll see with our engines is about 5whp with any given exhaust system. $400 for 5whp is $80/hp. that's way too much money per horse. i have the racing beat one and all i get out of it is a deep rumble. it's all for looks and sound anyway.

ok, just kidding. I LOVE MY RACING BEAT! it was worth every dime. throttle response has definitely improved, even more so than with the intake alone. not sure about real power gains though. it feels more responsive than stock at 4-6K rpms though, that's for sure. but it could all be the placebo affect since i spent so much money. gotta get on the dyno to see where i'm at.

I vote rear section (axle back) unless you ever plan to go FI.

Your not working with a killer HP engine to begin with and (personally) the $400 or so on the exhaust could be better spent.

For example, I got a AEM SRI and an HKS exhaust setup for the same price I would have spent on a RB exhaust.

Magnafow is a good choice. It's the one I'm going with. Nice throaty sound, full ss construction with lifetime warranty, nice throaty sound and it looks good too. No big ass canister sitting under the bumper or huge tip.

But if you're expecting big hp gains you'll be disappointed. You will get a little more torque and alot better throttle response.

Make sure you check the Magnaflow website for an authorized dealer close to you. I found one close to me that can get it in for around $340.

cool. thanks for you input guys! :)

i know i'm not getting big HP gains with a catback so i might have to re-check my finances first..... heh.

anyone w/ pictures of the magnaflow?
so u guys think that axleback is enoughf sense the stock piping looks pritty good to...

the catback is worth it.. i get better acceleration, better throttle response, the car pulls stronger and you get extra hp that you can actually feel at the wheels.
also you get better sound coming from the car itself...basically, the car gets a nice boost in performance.
if you have an intake then a catback is a must for proper engine breathing.

too bad our cats and the downpipe are such big restrictions. a new downpipe with high flow cats and bigger piping from the header on down to the exhaust tip will definitely increase power. racing beat, who helped design the mp3 says that the cats are our biggest restrictions.

my car is still slow, even with CAI and RB cat back. go figure. $600 for .0000001 seconds off 0-60. i still love my slotege5, really. i do.

so which cat back is better, for NA right now but later on for turbo, i heard that JIC is the best one for that kind of situation

JIC is sweet cause it's a straight thru N1 design (read no muffler) with very light weight piping. the RB cat back is about 48 pounds whereas the JIC is only 18 or something ridiculous like that. Rishie has the JIC's for around $600 i think. don't quote me on that. he swears by it, and everyone who's heard his car says its badass. and now with his turbo, apexi says it sounds even better.

How deceptive. I"m getting in on a group buy for the MagnaFlow CatBack and it's going to be like $270 plus shipping. I'm looking forward to closing the GB and hoping we can get those in soon... like early - mid next month.

this thread began almost a year ago which could explain a bit
