Cat-back straight pipe?

Has anyone tried this on their MS3? I can get a 3" one done for ~$100 and have had this done on a DSM awd several years ago to a great effect (more hp gained than a certain famous-maker exhaust).

I was really curious about two things: 1) the noise level. Turbos generally muffle some of the engine noise, so that it's not too bad, but I thought I'd check in advance. If anyone has done this and has an audio file, please share; and 2) If anyone has tried this and actually dynoed the car afterwards to check actual power gains.

I have seen in other threads where 3" is only good for 300+ hp, but that wasn't the case for my '99 GSX. Any and all of your experiences and thoughts are appreciated.

I'll be out until this weekend, then I can respond. Thanks!

So, if I were to keep the OEM cat back and put on a test pipe to replace the last cat, would I still see gains? Just curious...

resinators and mufflers disrupt the air flow

Cat-backs have no gains. The 3" is referring to a full TBE as I have. Cat backs are useless...

how can you say removing the resiantors and mufflers gives "no gains" mufflers and resiantors catch up the air and cuase backpressure. may not be huge gains but there would be some gain from the more free flow. not to mention much better sound

Agreed.....

Me and my friend both have MS3's. Him with a CAI and me with a CAI and catback exhaust and i am clearly quicker than him. Now he just bought a downpipe and testpipe so now i'll be the slower one.

How can I say it, maybe because I know from experience. No gains that will be noticable unless cats are removed.

Obviously with a CAI you might feel a little more, but not much. Everything you are putting to the ground is due to the CAI.

I can't argue either way because i never dyno'd before and after each mod, but I am clearly faster than my friend and the only difference is the CBE.

Go for it man! I had 3" on my PT CRUISER TURBO...it deff freed up some power and i lost almost all back pressure and the end result was insane the turbo spooled up faster but it was really loud the cabin noise wasnt so bad but on the street it had a hell of a growl to it... all i had was a 3" down pipe high flow cat and then just my 3" straight pipe...JUST DO IT! www.trubendz.com is where i got mine from...
