Car was shaking in the rain

Hi All,

I am new to this forum and I have to say this forum kicks ass!!!

I have a question that I want to ask. I hope you can give me some advises.

Recently I was driving my 3 in the rain. When I tried to accelerate a little hard from a full stop, my car shaked and I heard 3 to 4 distinct sounds per second coming out from the front. (It felt like someone was hitting my car). I am driving a manual, so I am not sure if it is because I didn't release the clutch fast enough. When the car started moving for 2 seconds, the sound/shaking went away. While the car was moving, no matter how hard I tried to press the accelerator, it didn't happen again.

It happened only when I try to accelerate a little hard from a full stop while the road is wet. I asked my friend and they said that probably my tires were slipping. But slipping shouldn't shake and make distinct sounds, right?

Does anyone experience this before?

Any comments are welcomed!!!

Thank you!!

Welcome to the forums.

Even though the description is a little different it sounds like you are experiencing wheel hop. That happens when your wheels keep repeatedly getting traction and losing, making the wheels hop and your car make an awful knocking sound. Doing it in wet weather is much easier because you lose traction much faster.
Go easier on the launches on wet pavement to deal with the problem. other ways of minimizing wheel hop is getting stiffer springs and stiffer motor mounts. I have one stiffer motor mount and it improved my wheel hop a lot.

I'll take a guess here - and I could be wrong.

Wheel hop in the rain - sounds like you should practice driving stick a little more.

You should be able to just let the clutch out and get rolling without touching the gas at all, I've shown this to tons of people before that claim they can drive stick just fine. Your clutch will last you alot longer too.

cbcbd is right, it's wheel hop. Very surprising at first but you will get use to it. This car is very sensitive to wheel hop in fact it's the most sensitive I have ever driven. Be careful when it happens though, if you keep pushing hard on the gas pedal you can brake something. (I think)

Thank you so much all of you!!! I am new to driving a stick and I seriously know nothing about car. Thank you so much for all of your opinions!!!

I have the same problem and yes part of it is wheel hop. But I also noticed the motor mounts suck on the is car. Try speed shifting (not letting off the gas and just tapping the clutch. And you'll really feel it. If anyone knows how to fix this please tell me.

Won't stiffer mounts make your ride rougher, though?

Unfortunately, there's no such critter available for the 3 yet. (yupnope)

Yes, but it's a compromise and you only really feel it under 1000rpm. Other than that it's worth having better throttle response and a lot wheel hop. Plus, you get a free massage :D

Bogus!
Maybe one of you guys could make some inserts. Ask Kooldino about it, he made some inserts for the back mount on the protege
