Car Not Starting...

I leave my car parked outside a friend's house last night, when I get back my car won't start. I turn the key and nothing happens, no ticking sound or anything, which means it's not the battery causing the problem...

What could this be?

Alternator, bad battery cable, starter, how are you sure it's not the battery? If was completely dead from the battery just dying, I wouldn't think there would be any ticking sound, etc. anyway.

I assume you checked battery terminal connections...I let mine get corroded pretty badly and the P5 did the same that yours did. I cleaned them and she started right up.

turned out to be the battery. weird considering the was no ticking when I turned the key...

A completely dead battery = no clicking.

I work at a dealership, this happens all the time. Sometimes the you don't get clicking yet still have power to illuminate the oil light of all things.

I'm a little confused as to why you think it should click no matter what.

Batteries will do that. I had a similar problem with a VW Scirocco once with a factory battery. Worked great. Started the car, kept the lights on, rocked the subs. Stopped at my destination, restarted after 5-minutes...battery dead. The cells shorted out so even a jump wouldn't keep that 4-banger with a pulse.

I replaced the battery and never had a problem since. Lesson learned, whatever battery you have replace it one year before it says it will last. It's better than being stranded when it dies.

Incidently, I had Suspension Techniques lowering springs and Bilstein struts so the ride was stiff. Stiff suspension usually jars the battery into a shorter life when the plates in them drop. Once they drop they short that particular cell. I ended up buying a marine battery that could handle the harsh ride.

Nowdays there are SUV batteries that can handle extreme vibrations.

could have simply tried turning on the lights to see if the battery was dead :)

When my battery died there was no clicking or lights at all. If your battery is dead, and I mean truely dead, you won't get anything from it.

Well there was no clicking, but. . .

-The radio was working
-My lights turned on no problem
-All my gauges illuminated

weird.

^ When mine went there was nothing at all. None of the lights worked, no clicking, nothing. Maybe you have a dying starter too, and your dying batter didn't have enough juice to get the solenoid to work. I assume that Montreal is getting pretty cool right now too, and with the winters you get a new battery is probably a good thing to have.

Maybe that was just the remaining battery power fizzling out through those things..

yea, lights and radio take a lot less power than the starter. Check the obvious stuff before diving in to harder stuff. You'll save yourself a ton of time.

I had a similar problem, car wouldn't start, dash lights, but nothing else. Then later on, i finally got some solenoid clicking, but no starter turn over. I was concerned about the battery since i was getting a little more action when i boosted the car via a battery charger/starter (this one actually, http://www.centurytool.net/87151_Century_15_2_100_Amp_6_12_Battery_Charger_p/87151c.htm). It wasn't much more action, but i would at least hear the starter attempting to move (but not quite turn over). I have a brand new optima yellow top battery, which was just today cited at 14.4 volts by mazda, so I do wonder if my battery was just frozen solid, i was recommended to pick up a battery blanket/warmer by mazda (which i intend on doing). I am not sure what happens when a battery freezes completely (if that's even possible with the yellow top that i have).

Also, the charger/booster that i used only pushes 100A down the line when it is in booster mode. I know that is much less than what my battery is rated at, so I am wondering if the booster simply isn't powerful enough? Finally, I did get my room mate to boost me with his running car but the results were worse than the booster. As a side note, i was a little unimpressed when his '90 integra started with minimal effort after having been sitting out in -30 for about 3 days without starting, not even plugged in. oh well...

ugh, this is annoying. it seems that if the temp drops below 25 celsius my car becomes totally inoperable. I really wish i knew what the cause of this is.

I think you're missing something here. If the lights were turning on no problem, you obviously had battery voltage. It's cold out, our cars are getting older, You've probably started it 1000 times. I'd say the starter solenoid is on it's way out. If you try it 5 or 6 times, sometimes they just spring back to life, other times you need a hammer to hit it. I'd say that before the battery.

As for you, I would suspect the starter motor itself, or a corroded connection at the starter.
