Can't Take the Squealing!!

Ok I have had enough. I cant take the squealing any more!!! (argh) My car squeals when I start driving and at every light when I go to take off it squeals until I get up to speed. I thought it was my belts so I checked them. They are absolutely fine. I also put dressing on them just in case. The squealing has not stopped at all. The whole squealing issue started when it started to get colder outside. It only seems to squeal on the cold days.

Does any one have any ideas whatsoever on what could possibly be causing this incessant noise???

I apologize if this made no sense as it is Monday morning and I am not quite awake yet.

its still probably the belts... just replace them

i had a problem like that once on my celica and the belts were good. come to find out it was the alternator, it had froze up sort of speak. it started squealing real bad one day and i bounce the engine of the redline and the belt broke. when i went to replace the belt i checked all the pulleys and the alternator pulley wouldn't spin! this was in a matter of a couple days tho, from start of squeal till the belt snapped. I replaced the alternator and problem was gone.

Yeah, take off the belt(s) and make sure you can turn everything that needs turning easily by hand. If you can turn it....lube it or replace it till you can turn it

probably just old belts..even though they are tight they can still squeel, and dont overtighten

I checked and the belts are not too tight, nor are they too loose. I think I am going to replace them anyways just to eliminate that possibility. I have also read that it could be the alternator pulley?? Is that easy to replace?

welcome to the protege world haha the belts will make noise especially when its cold, new ones will stop it but it will still chirp sometimes, the alt pulley is a b**** to do, its almost eazyer to pull the motor and do it haha

I have the same problem. A different thread says it is your starter that is jammed with clutch dust

haha no... and yes the alternator is a MAJOR PITA....its worse than the ps pulley.... i was very suprised to see how heavy it was though, the medieval one is tons lighter

man dirty speed protege's and there endless problems id say replace the belt my car does that too i think its cuz its an aftermarket belt so make sure to replace with a mazda one

Thanks for all the tips. I am going to install a new one today. I got a goodyear one because that is all they had in stock. Now how do I install it???

I have this exact issue where the squeal is louder as I accelerate from 1st to 2nd. Sometimes it is in 3rd or reverse. I was wondering if this problem was resolved by changing belts as I could not find any threads with these specific symptoms getting resolved. I ask because it really does not seem to be coming from the belts.
