Can You Hardwire a TOMTOM One GPS?

I tried to do this myself, but electricity and I don't mix and I ended up frying two power-cords.

The idea was to cut the cigarette-adapter tip of the power cord and simply tap into the back of the accessory plug...which I did by splicing into the (+) and (-), but when I tried to powerup my GPS it emitted this high-pitch whine and this strong burnt smell, then shutdown and wouldn't turn back on. After flashing the GPS and determining that the first power adapter was cooked I tried it again. Same results. (argh)

I have no idea what to do. There is 12V coming out of the lighter and 12V at the back were I spliced in.

Any ideas? I don't want this stupid line running up my dash anymore.

And while were at it - has anyone figured out a way to tie these things into your ignition so they come on with the car?

Thanks to anyone that is smarter than me for their advice.
