can you burn rubber? (2.5L fwd owners)

:
RDX Aspec Adv.
From a stoplight in the rain, can you spin your tires a significant amount just punching it? No stalling up the converter?

I did this accidentally when I was trying to make a left from a small street with on coming traffic, conditions were dry. I feel its both the fault of the horrible toyo tires and traction control system. either of the two need to work better.

I meant with TC off, in the rain, dead-ahead from a stand-still.

The reason I ask, is I cannot. I get a bit of a sqeak out of them, a tiny amount of torque steer for 1-2 feet of forward motion, and that's all.

I am trying to determine if that's the result of an SUV with a 4banger, or it my AWD really is that effective, so I am asking what happens in the FWD version.

*I have Continental CrossContact LX20 tires.

It is easy to make the tires squeal with the FWD.

It sounds like my AWD is doing pretty impressively! It's as good as my Jeep was, although that might be premature as my Jeep had over twice as much power, but still! I am pleased. Can't wait for ice and snow to see how it compares!

Get some track time with it, if you can. You will be impressed. I was shooting some work at Harris Hill in central TX and the track manager said to take it for some laps, so I did. Excellent control throughout. I imagine AWD would be even more fun.

On my 2013 2.0 FWD it was very easy to peel out in your scenario.

On my 2015 2.5 AWD it will slip the front maybe an 1/8th or 1/6th of a rotation, and then the rear hooks up and you get launched forward with no slip. Even from a dead stop making a turn, it just hooks up and goes. It makes me smile every time!

I've been meaning to go up there. I remember when I bought from cx-5 from Roger Measley Mazda, the guy told me about some mazda track days they have there.

The 'ol Rainy Day Racer test, eh? Having worked in various locations in the U.S., I can say that road compounds (aggregate/asphalt) vary greatly by region as do other factors such as rainfall frequency and temperature. All this affects off the line traction, especially in the rain.

Don't need rain. My drive to work everyday, part of it is on a small road but it's dusty and very easy to spin the tires.

YES! San Antonio was the worst, by far! With new F1GSD3's, my LS1 car would get sideways barely rolling onto the throttle in 2nd gear in a corner. I don't mean trying, either. I mean just rolling onto it 30% or so. Crazy.

Good to hear, but the limits are very low with this vehicle. I drove it in a spirited manner a few times on my curvy mountain roads, and it was very traction-limited. I typically do not push vehicles very hard on the street at all, and this one squealed the tires in a few corners. For me to push it that hard on the street, it's got seriously low limits.

I have found that braking and turning killed more of my tires than spinning them ever did.

You will accelerate faster if you don't spin them up. Spinning tires is sometimes used by frustrated persons to release pent up feelings. But it's more expensive than psychotherapy on a second per second basis and diminishes vehicle control.

Oh that can be solved. And with a relatively low amount of $ without sacrificing utility. Check under "stage 1" for suspension in stage thread in my sig. Can't really speak for the poopy geolanders I never had them on my 15 and had them for about 5000 on my 13.

It depends. Some of the best 60' times you will see on street tires involve SLIGHT spin. It's cheaper than slipping the clutch, as well.

Curious, but have you managed to get the thing to pull well past 1g in a dynamic corner yet? Even the cheapest, most basic sports cars can pull 1.1-1.2g dynamically in a corner.

This thread is priceless for entertainment value!

Maybe it should be stickied? (wink)

I haven't been to the track yet. One of these days I'll get up to Harris Hill raceway.
