Can mp3 CD be played in 2008MY?

Do you guys think the CD player/changer/Navi CD changer can read mp3 CD? Or we still need to have the dealer install option to do that?

That means if I am going to get the Navigation System, I will be out of luck for playing mp3 (protest)

That is not acceptable in my opinion for 2008 model year.

US Mz5's with factory changers never had mp3 capability, and the 2008 specs I've seen don't mention any change there. The accessory changer costs way too much - $422 at the local dealer here.

At least the 08's have an aux-in jack, a portable mp3 player is much cheaper.

I really like the AudioLink USB interface. The I-pud plugs in as a line audio feed, but more importantly, cheap USB flash drives and SD cards are a quick change and something I have little reservation about leaving plugged in out in the open. The lack of a track text display is only a minor issue if like me, you rarely change what's on each stick.

For my 06 there was an MP3 factory option under special order, maybe worth checking?

Same for 07, but the MP3 changer is the same part as the one the local dealer here is selling for $$$. It's cheaper to buy a $50-$60 Aux-in/Auxmod and add the portable mp3 player of your choice.

Also, the 1st generation Harman Drive+Play is going for <$50 on Fleabay.

That is true. Now that I see it in more detail, it is pricey (dealer, factory or whatever ;)). I just remember that the sales guy told me about it, but since this was the only 5MT around for miles I was not willing to think about any other options. I said "today I get the deal on this one as is, I don't care about OEM extras :p (plus was the end of the month for them and they needed to meet their sale quotas, meaning willingness to negotiate)"

Wife has tons of CDs she likes, so the CD changer has done its job so far. She would obviously like MP3 functionality, but hey, When Are women entirely content about anything anyway :D?

A radio not having .mp3 capability in today’s market is completely unacceptable. So… go aftermarket.

I’ve been seeing kits for around $130 for the M5, and you can buy a great head unit from crutchfield for $150 to $200. And if you do go aftermarket, I highly recommend buying a head unit that has a USB port on front. I use that almost exclusively in my Camry – I just load a 2GB flash drive with.mp3s, .wmas, or non-DRM .aacs and just plug it in. It’ll shuffle within a folder, within the entire drive, you can add / remove music or other files from any computer, etc. When you take it out and put it back in (or turn the car back on), it'll start at the exact spot where it last turned off. But what I find myself using it most for is podcasts.

Each week I download a number of podcasts that I then listen to during my normal drives off of my flash drive, or when I exercise (off of my normal .mp3 player). There are a ton of free podcasts out there, the ones I get are NPR shows like This American Life, All Music Considered, and Car Talk, as well as the Clark Howard talk show (his podcasts are commercial free). The unit that I have in my ’95 Camry is the Sony GT410U but there are quite a few out there and there'll be even more in a few months once the '08 aftermarket car radios come out.

Don't spend money on CD changers - they are literally obsolete. For that matter, CD's are slowly becoming obsolete also. You'll be seeing more and more head units in the near future that do not play CDs.

I do not currently have a Mazda5, I was waiting to see what ’08 offered as well as waiting to see if Toyota and/or Honda were going to enter the 6-seater “microvan” market.
