can I replace stock tweeters?

Yeah, they're for high pitch sounds, just like how subs are for low pitch (bass) sounds.

i don't think i've ever seen just a pair of tweeters being sold alone, but there's component speakers with a crossover, woofer, and tweeter. I replaced all the speakers in my 3s with the CDT 6.5" components, and they sound great. the cdt tweeter fits right into the stock tweeter position, too.

any speakers out there can be bough seperatly.
kind of find it funny that you want to replace it but you don't even know what it does, if u don't know what it does how do you know it's doing it wrong?
now if your going to replace those, u might as well spend the money and get a good componet set that comes with tweeters, midrange speakers, and crossovers to go with them.

When you watch a movie in a theater or go to a concert do you enjoy hearing the reverb from the back of the hall/theater/venue louder than the musicians/movie in front of you?
Trust me on this one (and 1sty and everyone else on this forum), A set of components up front will make you forget about the rear speakers. You will get plenty of crystal clear highs and solid midbass (and a decent amount of sub bass as well compared to the stock speakers).
Oh, and its not the rear speakers that is distorting for you, its the stock amplifier most likely. The stock speakers may sound bad, but they don't distort until a bad signal is fed into them; as is the case with most speakers.

because manufacturers make 5x7's and such cheaply, its basically a drop in speaker that people want to replace without any mess or fuss to get a little better sound. 6.5" componet sets, they put allot more time into r &d and parts because these are for people who are more into quality sound and are willing to do more to get the best sound available.

i think the way the woofer is shaped has something to do with an audible difference between a 5x7 and a 6.5. I think the 6.5's are supposed to reproduce the sound better... correct me if i'm wrong.
as for the stock tweeters, when I first got my car, I put my ear up to the tweeter and i couldn't hear a thing, even with the door speaker pretty loud, so at least my stock tweeter was crap.

its not really true, but not untrue either, there are some nice non round home speakers out there. it can be done, but generally with your 4x6's and 6x9's etc. people are just looking for an easy solution to get some slightly better sound. so generally not allot of time and money is spent on getting the best sound out of them.
