Cam timing issue 2.5 liter

Cam timing issue 2.5 liter Mazda CX-5 GT. 2014 Mazda with 210,000 miles blowed the head gasket. Since i needed to remove the head I purchased a Cloyes chain kit for the oil pump and timing chain. I took many pictures of the timing marks at TDC before disassembly and replaced everything after reinstalling the head. On startup it seemed ok then it stubbled and shut off. Everytime I started it, the engine sounded different. Thinking the timing may be off, i removed the valve cover and timing marks lined up like they should. This time I set the VVT at the middle of the range, 8 turns from where it stops. The engine started up fine but after a few seconds started running rough until it shut off. Am i missing something with the VVT, since it seems to be changing once i start the car. Could a sensor have been damaged or failed while i was performing the work? Any advice is appreciated, especially if you work on these everyday. Thanks in advance.
