Calls and messages muffled

I have a 2016 CX-5, that recently, when reading messages or hands-free phone calls, the sound is muffled. I can increase the volume but sound quality does not change.
I took it to the dealer they told me I needed a new audio amplifier. I did that myself but no change.
I checked for updates and did a factory reset. No change.

Anyone have any ideas?

Yes all speakers work, it is just the sounds for messages and phone calls sound like they have a pillow over their face. Dealer said it was the audio amplifier, but I changed that and it made no difference.

The only other thing I can say is, check your settings. bluetooth call volume on the phone? Could be anything.
