Buying used Cobb AP

What do i need to look out for when buying a Used Cobb AP?

1) Are there some older versions that are not as good as newer produced ones or can they all be updated to a current state Via Web upload? Are there any hardware differences between old and new?

2) How can i verify that an AP is actually unmarried from a car? Will there be some sort of indication on power up?

3) If previously used with a MS3, will i have to download changes specifically for the MS6 to connect? obviously i would have to get MS6 Maps, but could i directly connect/marry to the MS6 and run log's right after the AP has been unmarried from a MS3?

Thanks

AFAIK the AP is different for the MS3 and MS6, so it won't work. Find out when they bought it, as it only has a 12 month warranty. Cobb had a problem w/ the screens dying out, but I think they have corrected that problem. I bought mine in Feb or March, and the screen died after like 5 weeks. They replaced it, and changed some circuits, and I haven't had a problem since. I was without an AP for 18 days though, which sucked (and I sent it in priority mail).

Not sure about verifying whether or not it has been unmarried... call Cobb and ask them. They all have a serial number. Also, I'm not sure if the 1 yr warranty is for the original purchaser only, or if it is transferrable.. may want to ask them that too.

The AP is the same for the MS3 and MS6, you just can't use the MS3 files for the MS6 and vice versa. Whoever is selling the AP has to unmarry it from their car first...if they don't then I think you have to send it to Cobb to get it reset.

OK thanks guys. It sounds like if i buy a used one that i am better off buying one that was originally bought after March 2010 to avoid potential LCD issues.

MS3/MS6 AP's are MAZ-002. Same unit, it recognizes which vehicle you have.

The newer units have a smaller OBD2 port as well IIRC. The original APs had a modular unit with a flexible mini-USB connection on them.

One thing when buying used to consider is making sure the unit is unmarried. Otherwise it's an expensive brick to you.

Thanks, I didn't realize that. I just knew the MS3's have a few tables (feul enrichment, etc.) that we don't have, so I didn't think it would work.

out of curiosity, if you buy a used AP, can you still download ATR from cobb for free? I know you have to enter the serial # off the AP, didn't know if they only release it to the original buyer and then you have to download it somewhere else? Thanks

You just register with Cobb and they send you the link for your AP, it isn't limited to the original owner.

Thanks guys for your input. I got myself a ver 2 COBB AP (one with OBD2 Dongle plus USB cable). The unit was unmarried and i have no issues connecting it to my car, and i have updated it using AP updater.
All you need is the serial # of the AP unit you have and COBB will send you the ATR software, i have uploaded ATR without issue and i am not the original owner (was from a MS3).

As far as i know, when you power up an unmarried unit, the AP should give you the option to "INSTALL". If the car is married already then the install option is disabled and not seen on the display. Someone please correct me if i am wrong.
