Copy this link to find out what is happening with the Mazda's that were in the cargo ship that nearly sank. I have a feeling some dealerships are going to end up with a lot of very low mileage used vehicles in the near future. I just can't believe that a vehicle would be safe to use after being tipped nearly on it's side for the better part of a month.

As long as they dont sell them for new I would be ok with one of those RX8s hehehe.

Mazda to work holidays to make up for near-sunk cars
Some damaged Mazda3s to be sold as used cars in North America

Reuters / September 12, 2006 - 10:00 am

TOKYO -- Mazda Motor Corp. said today it has worked on some weekends as of August, and will keep doing so until October, to make up for the 2,804 Mazda3 cars that were damaged or destroyed when a ship carrying them to North America rolled over in July.

The Cougar Ace vessel, owned by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd., was carrying a total of just over 4,700 cars from Japan when it listed off the Alaskan Coast. It was later stabilized and towed to a harbor in Alaska, and is due to arrive in Portland, Ore., later today.

Mazda said it was unclear what condition the cars were in. Repairable vehicles would be sold as used cars through its dealer network in the United States and Canada, with their identification numbers listed on the company's Web site.

The Mazda3, built at the Hofu plant in western Japan, is Mazda's best-selling model. Another quarter of the cars aboard the 654-foot ship were new CX-7 SUVs.

Mazda had said the shipment was fully insured against loss, but a spokesman said the carmaker was still in talks with insurers about the settlement of damages.

Mazda imports most of its vehicles to North America from Japan. The shipment aboard the Cougar Ace was bound for Vancouver, British Columbia; Tacoma, Wash., and then Port Hueneme near Ventura, Calif.

They were secured on the ship; I don't see how being tilted could affect the safety of the car as long as it wasn't damaged (and if it was, they will fix it before selling it).

This could turn out to be a good deal to potential buyers. If Mazda can collect an insurance settlement for the difference in sale price, and what they would've charged the dealer for the car, they may not have too much motivation to sell them for as much as possible, passing potentially huge savings on to buyers.

They are selling as used, but they are brand new. Sounds like a deal to me because it would have a warranty.

Yep - if the warranty is the same as new it might be a great deal! I've kinda been eyeing the CX-7...

thay also stated that the dealerships would need to notify the buyers of the incident. Plus theyre being sold with the standard new car warranty for used car prices. Read that yesterday on MSN.
