Burning Oil

Is there anything I can do to keep my 2002 P5 from burning its engine oil? I'm using the factory recommended oil.

Mine has been burning oil pretty good too. I switched from penzoil 10-30 to castrol 10-30 and it seems like it isn't burning it as fast now. Not sure how much it depends on the oil brand but i think these cars just tend to eat them up especially since most are high mileage now. Yah if your still using 5-30 i dont see a problem in stepping it up to 10-30 or 10-40. Even though it does slow her down a bit more, trust me i could tell after the switch, but that way it has a higher viscosity so it wont tend to eat it as fast.

im at 145k and havent had a problem. of course penzoil is the last oil i would ever use. i use castrol high milage.

I'd rather eat my own foot than use the search function on here. I find more googling key words then throwing "mazdas247" at the end of the search. Though I'm sure if the OP looked, they could find a previous post with some information. Just a hint jorgest!

Try changing your pcv valve as well. Some guys say it had worked and for a few bucks why not?

Not really much you can do.
1) check for and repair any leaks that you can see under the car.
2) change PCV valve
3) do a compression test on the cylinders
4) replace valve seals
5) replace piston seals

My guess is that unless you have a leak under the car there is not much you will want to do. If you are burning less than 1/2 liter per fill up don't worry about it too much.

Try the pcv valve first like suggested if that doesn't help do a compression test. More then likely your piston rings are allowing oil to pass thee to the combustion chamber and causing your car to burn oil. Some people have had good luck doing a "piston soak" using treatments like seamfoam.

I would say it's likely the seals, this is pretty common at the mileage you have on the engine.
I need to do my own, it burns oil like crazy, 212k miles and counting.

One way to tell if your valve seals are leaking, after letting the car sit over night, remove the spark plugs and look down the holes to see if any wettness to the piston. If you don't see anything( valve seals are not leaking), put the spark plugs back and start the car for maybe 2 secs and remove the plugs again. If you see wettness and don't smell gas down the holes, it's the piston rings that are bad.
