What is the difference versus the "upgrade" models? are they better ? Brighter ? what is the difference?

stick with OEM, sylvania or whatever, nothing special

other bulbs might have the "cool" factor, but they have also been known to draw more current and melt your wiring harness, others have been known to blow out prematurely (every few months)

good luck changing the cock suckers, my gorrilla hands wont even begin to fit, both my low beams burned out 4 monthes ago, i am unable to replace them. at the moment im looking for a how to on how to remove my bumbper so i can get at the bulbs(pissed)

that blows dude, just get a friend with small hands to do it for you, save the effort of removin the bumper and all that bulls***

my apc 4000Ks finally burned out after about 6 months. im either gonna get another set of those (they provide great light output and havent melted anything) or pick up the titanium whites. not sure yet., but i hate the stock bulbs my stockers are no where near bright, and i cant see a damn thing at night with em

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but the manual says to pull out the plug by simply pulling toward the rear of the car. Now, i can get a damn good grip on it (small hands), and it just wont budge!!!! Something is deffinatly sticking. Does anyone have any tips? I've tried wiggling it around, and pushing and then pulling, and im out of ideas....

This is for my '02 protege5, and i have the stock bulbs in their currently.

I recommend you read the HowTo! Search for "How To: Replace Headlight Bulbs" in Mazda Forums > General Tech > How-To. They are definitely tricker than I thought they would be.

Also, my personal lightbulb recomendation is to stick with the OEM replacement bulbs (I have Sylvania Halogen from Kragen) - I have heard to many stories about early burnouts for fancy ones like the blue ones before m cheapos. Not only did the blue ones burn early and cost 5x more than the cheap stuff, they also were really dim due to the blue filtering. Also stay away from HID unless you are willing to risk an illegal setup and possibly blinding oncoming traffic.

no need. After letting my frustration simmer for a while, it only grew. So I went outside, and went ahead and used brute force. Freed up after I (in a cave man like fashion) yanked as hard as I could and it just freed up.

That little retainling spring thingy was tricky to get back on, but i got it relativly quick.

Once you get the plug off (with brute force) you're golden. Its pretty easy from there.

EDIT: Oh and yea, i replaced them with OEM's. Though, after I replaced the bulb that went out, i decided to compare the new to the old. And the new ones were still whiter and brighter despite being the exact same model and type. Ill see how they both look tonight when im out.

EDIT#2: Pliers help. I grabbed the plug with some pliears, and used the headlamb body for leverage to pull the plug off. As long as you make sure you pull the plug straight off, you should be fine. For those of you having trouble, try that. It worked when i removed the second bulb.

UPDATE: how to on low beam replacement.

DO NOT TAKE OUT ANY SCREWS!

Once you remove the white wire plug from the back of the adapter, and remove the rubber boot, you will expose 3 screws, holding a wire retainer clip in place.

DO NOT TAKE OUT ANY SCREWS!

place your finger in the back of the headlight assembly and nudge the wire retaining clip off the post, it should swing to the side, releasing the lightbulb.

now, does anyone have one of those screws thay feel like mailing me? i lost one of mine......

What type of Sylvania bulb do you need to replace it. I went to Autozone and it told me a H7 bulb, I got home and tried to put it in and it was not wide enough. The bulb that I took out of there (which is not the right bulb, but worked) is a GE H4. I don't know what to do I just can't find the right bulb and I am going out of my mind. I am ready to sell the damn thing just because of the lightbulbs.

H7 should be correct. You'll need to remove the socket from the old bulb, put it on the new one, and then put it back in the housing.

Nice thread. I got one bulb that gives pretty good light, and one that looks like it's on it's last legs on the passenger side. Dim, crappy light. On the to-do list for the weekend! Now if only there were a cheap replacement fog light for my one with the stone ding...

the H7 is indeed the bulb you need, Mogi has got you the right advice, there is a socket that unplugs from the bulb, thats probly whats throwing you off.

A long, flat-head screwdriver placed between the plug and the bulb housing worked for me. I had the plug on each side of the car off in 5 seconds. Just pry/wiggle it gently and the plug will come right off. I tried pliers, but was afraid of crushing the plastic plug.
