Building a laptop

Building a notebook in general is a lot more expensive, and harder than say a desktop. There seem to be very few resouces for the person that wants to do it himself/herself when it comes to notebooks. I looked at the link to asus and if you are going the route of having a notebook custom made by a vendor, than I would look at a couple of different places.

Some good places to get a notebook are, asus like you have there, DELL, and Cyberpower inc. I would stay away from HP, Compaq, and Gateway at all costs! Also DELL will price match on competitors, so if you find something you like give DELL a call and see what they can offer. However when I was working for DELL they did not price match Cyberpower inc.

Price wise, when it comes to notebooks $1200 is going to put you not quite middle of the road. Extremely low end note books go for around $900 bucks, and high end notebooks can easly go for $2500-$3000+. So when making a decision, make sure you know what you want to use the notebook for now, and in the future, and plan according to that. Since notebooks aren't as expandable as desktops try and buy something a little more than what you need, that way you have something that will last, and you won't out grow to fast.

Well good luck with your decision, and when you make one.. enjoy!

Ok i know 1200 will put me about middle of the road. I don't plan on using it for gaming, or anything really stressful. I know i could build a comparable desktop for around 600-700.
I basially want it to
1. Tune my car
2. Be able to walk around campus and get a internet connection
3. Take it on trips and use the dvd player

Hell, I have an older laptop that can do all three of those things with ease. =) Only a 400Mhz, but it's an indestructible IBM 600E. And I'm selling it since I have my new laptop.

If that is your plan than you are on the right track for the money. I personally would get a DELL notebook, not because I worked for them, but because they are a high quality product, and you can get a lot for your money. Even before I was with the company I wanted one.

I would go check out the Inspirion 700M or 600M. Great thin, light notebooks, not expensive. Although that asus looked nice.

make it cool

make it were it has an hot coco dispencer and with nos cooling so its not too hot (wiggle) (drinks) (boobs2)

built the one i am on right now.

hp pavilion ze 4365
athlon xp-m 2400 processor
40GB HD
512 MB RAM (1GB capable)
DVD/CD-RW
15.1 screen
embedded wireless
and a lot of other s*** too.

cost $1256 before rebates back in june of 2003.

bought from Best Buy because their warranty kicks ass (3 yr for $250 and includes up to 3 replacement batteries) and they do 18 months no intrest.

I don't know, i just don't like dells i guess. My dads is nice, but it has a tendency to get really hot

I love my dell inspiron 8600. 15.4 screen, just kinda heavy and it will get warm.

zooooooom just do your homework before buying don't jump on the first laptop you see. it took me 5 months to choose mine.

At my last school everyone hat Sony Vios. But now I'm at Hopkins and almost teacher or student with a laptop has a G4 Powerbook.

Not sure why you should stay away from HP, mine works great and never have had a problem with it. I also do more than what you need and only paid 850 for mine, forget what model. What I would stay away from is Celeron processors, they are teh suck for laptops.

Ok, its not my first laptop. I have a hp pavilion that works pretty good, but its only a 1.0 celeron and i've had a lot of problems with it. My sister is just going to buy it off me and thats basically why i want a new one.
I ordered an ibm thinkpad with a 2.4 pentium 4 and it flies, but its got a crack in the screen so i'm returning it.
So I thought it would be fun to start with a barebones system and customize it to my needs.
I also really want the ability to be mobile. Thats why i want a mobile processor because having to find a place on campus to plug into sucks... So if i'm getting a new laptop, why not get one with an integrated wireless card already?

Toshiba....(im biased as I manage that business in Canada).

#1 in notebooks worldwide.

Stay away from Dell...I know where and how they are made.

I also worked for Compaq for 2 years.... not bad...better than Dell...but go with a Toshiba notebook.
