Broken forged piston

Any of you guys ever broke a forged piston and then not been able to find the part that broke?
There is no damage to the valves or the turbine side of turbo or inside of cylinder wall.

thats weird, cant say I have seen anyone with that before, maybe you got a crappy one :(

it doesn't matter what kind of space age engine parts you put in... it'll break if you don't tune it right!

A/R was 11.5 on my Aem Gauge and my nock gauge never went off. I know things can break but were did the part go? I mean it is a big part I can see the top ring about 1 inch long piece is completely gone

wow, that's interesting. maybe that 1" piece got broken down more and past through the exhaust or in the cat. Or it might be in the oilpan. Awaiting results.

Detonation will blow any piston, no matter forged or not. Usually the parts just come thru the valves or just is melted aluminum. I would check the turbine to see is there was no damage to the fins.

Could detonation be so light my nock sensor would have not picked it up this is not factory nock sensor. By the way turbine is fine not one single nick nothing. Tops of other pistons all have a slight carbon build up no white spots.

That's VERY odd. s***, that's downright amazing.

I'd check the oil pain/windage tray.

Where's that WTF flag...

Just pulled the plugs out of the head and took a look at them on my budys advice and there is a peace of porcelan missing from number three cylinder never looked at them earlier maybe that was the cause?

WTF over

just pulled apart a boosted RSX,same thing, but it melted the side of the piston off,all you can see is half of the top of the piston is missing.

Curious as to what knock sensor you are running and with what Engine management. Nevermind I see you also have a Haltech but does it have input for a knock sensor.

I have J&S and am now worried!!!

I would say no need to worry with the J&S, that thing is the s***. If you were running the J&S and it wasn't adjusted right, then it may be possible to detonate without it lighting up, but I doubt it would detonate enought to pop a piston and not be loud enough for the J&S to "hear"

i just pulled my head off like 2 months ago and I have all JE pistons and they were chipped as s*** at the edges due to my terrible tuning. Forged pistons WILL break with insufficeient tuning. Im lucky mine did not go out on me as of yet, but you have to make sure the tning is correct.

I am an advocate of Juans idea of using modified OEM pistons, because with proper tuning our pistons are good to go.

WOW welcome back on here! I was wondering if you were still around with the MSP...

No the Haltech does not have a place for a knock sensor. I am using the knock kit from Holley which on the dyno we did show some knock but the tunner did pull some timming and was working fine for the last 5000 miles. So I dont know if it was the broken spark plug or not or if it was bad tunning.
I am waiting for new pistons from Wiesco they said they had to make them up and would get them out to me ASAP also have just ordered the J&S knock gauge kit it will probably work better than the one I have know.

one problem may be a defect in the piston if your useing wiesco.I don't mean to rain on your parade, but they are not very well made compared to other forged pistons.

then again HIGHBOOST is running 30PSI on stock pistons that were machined for lower compression.

we have a set of wiesco in the shop now the owner of a boosted RSX wanted to put in.
I put a ARIAS up next to them,he changed his mind, then we called arias for a set for him.

just to add a quick comment regarding piston manufacturers, my "crew" prefers wisecos to arias. the hiboost set is a good choice, but for ~$10-15/piston more you can buy forged pistons(larger bore if needed).

but yes, as others have said: a forged piston can succumb to detonation.
