Broadband Installed Saturday Please Help

OK, finally getting BB installed on saturday. Its a 512 up, 1.5 down connection. Dynamic IP ... etc.

This pc and the one downstairs will be hardwired to wireless router, and the laptops will run on the wireless. The wireless router I will be using is the D-Link DI-264.

I currently have Norton Antivirus installed and will get either Norton Internet Security or just their Firewall program (unless someone can recommend something better). I will run this plus the firewall built into the router.

What else do I need to do (encryption, passwords) to protect myself.

IMO, Norton Internet Security is overkill. As long as you have NAV, setup the firewall on the router, you should be fine. Unless you're trying to hide something or are really paranoid. You could also try ZoneAlarm if you want, but I personally prefer just a decent antivirus proggy and the firewall on the router for home use.

As far as encryption and stuff, what are you looking to do exactly? You talking about Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) and Service Set Identifier (SSID)? Nothing to it really. Just follow the instructions in the manual and you'll be fine.

http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.a.../ DI-774 / DI-774_revB / DI-514 / DI-514_revC

If the consenus is that the built-in firewall and the NAV is good then ill stick with that.

I read that other post about people stealing wireless access and all this talk about SSID and WEP, so I had to ask... but if its all in the manual, i should be all set.

Things to check:

Change the default password
Do not broadcast your SSID
Use WEP
Enable router firewall

You can even have it assign your computers IP addresses and then block all others.

Yea I will definitely change the passwords.

How would I know if the SSID is being broadcast?

128 bit for WEP or is that overkill?

Router firewall will be going.

Stupid question... my comp is running XP right now with AOL on dialup. What do I have to do with the pc itself to hookup to the network we are installing? Im guessing once everything is wired up, that damn network connections icon wont show a red X anymore and I will be good. And when I click on the icon I will acess all shared files/folders on the network.

Will I have to change any browser settings?

Thanks for all the help .. I appreciate it.

Also if I open my Network connections window under LAN/Highspeed I see 2 icons ... 1394 and a Local Area connections.

In the properites section of both the Internet Connection Firewall and the Internet connection sharing are both un-checked. Are these things that I will have to check off to enable?

WEP is a must. I personally wouldnt go with wireless because the security isnt as good as wired or as fast. WEP is a must. Router security a must. The SSID should be changed because they usually come with a default one and anyone with a wireless NIC can come and steal your bandwidth. Firewalls are always good. You could always set up a VPN. You could have a VPN server and use EAP (extensible authentication protocol) and that way your access point wont allow access to anyone and it will go straight to the VPN server. This is much better because your server is a much smarter device than your access point,

128 bit is good if your router can do it.
Rule number one- The first thing you should do ASAP is get rid of AoHELL. That browser is practically a virus itself. Assuming you did everything right (setting up the network) it should just work. Before you go into your network neighborhood you need to share some files. Download Mozilla Firebird .7 Its the best. www.mozilla.org

1394 is the IEEE standard (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) for firewire. Firewire is a fast connection between two device as an alternative to USB 2.0 You see LAN/Highspeed because your LAN is your LAN, in other words your NIC. 1394 is just in case you wanted to use firewire for some reason.

Yea those settings are both up to you. For best security you can turn on Microsofts little firewall just for the hell of it. Internet connection sharing are if you wish to share files on your new WLAN.

Yea dont worry AOL is going byebye ... this is why we got BB. AOL sux. At least I only used it to get online and used external browsers for web use.

Thanks everyone again.
