about me: I'm 18, a sophomore at Cal State Fullerton. I work at a small pet store in mission viejo and i'm paid minimum wage...

so anyways, i've been going back and forth about which direction i should go for modding my p5. The very first mod i purchased was an Injen cold air intake... lol had i known that it wouldn't make much of a difference in performance, i prolly wouldnt have bought it at all.

I then got a TWM short shifter kit from my parents for my birthday a few months later. This is probably my favorite mod to the car. I later topped it off with a cheap ebay anodized black billet aluminum shift knob.

The next part i purchased was a ebay catback exhaust. sounded decent, fitment was fairly good but the resonator started to rattle after 4 months... (headshake). so i eventually sold it and put my stock exhaust back on. I also did a write up on it a while back.

To complete the I/H/E combination, i bought an ebay header (OBX replica?) which of course, i had fitment issues with and ended up selling it to HKPRO5 (i think). right after i bought a Ractive header which i was very pleased with.

soo i ran into my first problem, started the car up, everything sounded okay, drove it down to the gas station and filled up with 91 but i had about 1/8 tank of 87 still in the car. as the car accelerates past 2800 and winds down i get a "coffee can filled with bbs" type sound. i'm pretty sure its detonation but i'm not sure why. is it because the ecu is still adjusting to the car? or because i still had a bit of 87 octane in the car when i filled up?

oh and i'm running

msp ecu, manifold, turbo, s&j pipes
corksport fmic
hks ssqv3 with relocated maf

you should get a wideband and SSAFC. makes things easier. did you reset your ecu? lol

that was more than likely detonation, I would stay out of boost until I figure out what the issue is before you blow the motor. Drive all of the 87 octane out of the car and refill with 93 or whatever the highest octane level is in your area and I strongly agree with HKPRO5 about the SSAFC and wideband.

Like he said, stay out of boost. I never fill up with anything less than 93. Wideband is a MUST in my personal opinion.

lol i figured out the problem today... i feel like a complete ******* idiot... the lower bolt on the manifold heat shield was missing, causing it to rattle.... car runs pretty good now lol

glad you got it figured out, but when boosting these cars, you will still NEED a wideband and since you are switching to the MSP ECU, get the SSAFC. Since the MSP ECU is extremely rich, you won't regret getting the SSAFC.

i wanna see some pics of the setup! :)

Lol well it turns out the used turbo i purchased from another member on here blows by a good amount of oil... the car is back to na at the moment until i get my new CHRA for the t25.

A few more pics from the build have been added to the original post.

Well my cupholder was pretty scratched up, so i decided to paint it today. i picked up some charcoalish rust-oleum and did some spraying. i think it turned out pretty good since it's a little more subtle.

subbin... congrats on the lil bit of time you were boosted, get it back to turbo now! i agree with the above posts about getting a wideband and searching for a SSAFC
