Brand new P5 owner with some questions

WEll i did the un-thinkable. I traded in my 2000SiR for a 2003 silver P5! The reasons... never mind... the 30hp drop is still leaving me with mixed feelings. :)

Anyway some questions:

1- Could someone post a picture of a aftermarket stereo installed in this thing? From the looks of think its gonna look like ASS unless there is a nice plate that will cover up the big hole..

2- CD changers... Anyone have one installed? Where did you put it? Im tempted to just go MP3 and burn the collection on to CDRs

3- Is there any P5 dedicated web sites out there? Please post URLS

4- Any URLS for CANADAIN online tuner shops?

Thanks... I love the looks of this car... a 2" drop would make the stock 16"s look even better.

Kool, Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to our Club. There are TWO BIG fridge'S in the corner with anything you can think of in them...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. (stash)

make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!! (stash)

As for your questions....

there are quite a few different pockets that fill in the extra space left when installing a single din radio into our double din spot...just like the stock set up in the MP3 and the MSP.

NOPE...don't have one....my stock unit has the 6 disc changer built in...so can't help you there....

You can click on my www button and see some pictures of my after-market set-up. I have the MP3 pocket, and it's not cheap if you buy a new one, about $90. I got lucky and got a used one for $20 :D

I am looking at adding an alpine MP3 changer to my car, if you don't put amps under both seats, it has a pretty slim profile and will fit there. I have amps under both seats so it's going to have to go in the trunk. I am thinking I am going to mount it on the left side vertically in that little space between the wheel well and the rear of the car. It's tough to explain without a photo, but I hope you get it.

I have an MP3 headunit and love it. How useful it is depends on how much your willing to compromise on quality, for me the compromise is at 192kbps. I typically get 7-10 albums on a single 700mb disc this way. Now think of that with the alpine MP3 changer, that's like having a 50 dics changer in the trunk :D

There are some vendor sites, P5 specific vendor is mitch at http://www.protege5online.com Also check out Auto RnD. They have information posted on this site but their website isn't up yet.

As for general p5 sites, this and http://www.protegeclub.com are pretty much the only thing going.

Hope you continue to enjoy your P5 and welcome to the board :D

Not a big fan of the pocket :( Why not put a double DIN receiver in there?

Found these on Crutchfield when i did a search for Double DIN

you would have to check it out with the audio gurus on this forum, but if I remember right our dash is actually a litter larger then double din, it's like double and half. I thought about getting one of these but couldn't find one that had the features that I wanted then there were the fitment issues. I believe that if you got one of these you would have to fabricate some sort of special bracket to fill the gaps. Hopefully the audio gurus will pop in soon and can give you a definitive answer :)

Where did you get that? I put in a new single deck and my kit looks like ass! There is just a rectangular hole where you have the flip door. Please let me know how I can get that kit.

go to your Mazda dealer if you want to pay full price for it...that is the pocket that is installed in the MP3 and most likely the same one that you will find in the MSP....OR start searching on Ebay for one.......

Excuse my noobness, but what is an MSP? I have a P5...will this MP3 pocket fit? And...is the pocket all I need? I'm not an expert so I will just take to Future shop and get them to switch it with the kit that's already in there for my single DIN deck. When I had my deck installed, I was told that the kit I have in there now is the only one that would fit my P5. Is this true?

Okay,

The dealer is really the only place to get one, short of buying one off of somebody on the forums, or if your really lucky one might go up on ebay. I got lucky and picked one up at the dealer that they took out of another car for cheap. Otherwise it's about $90, mazdastuff might have it for a little less, but not much.

If you get the pocket, it's the only thing you'll need in addition to the sleeve that came with the stereo. There is also a horizontal bar that fills a small gap between the stereo and the pocket you can get from the dealer, or you can just fill it with some black foam insulation tape or something similar.

i put a 10 disc kenwood changer under my passanger seat. i wouldnt advise that, i wont hardly play when you are going down the road. it mighy just be the roads where i live though.

Cool, thanks man. So I guess this means that there is no problem with fitting the MP3 pocket in a P5?

Why don't you try a flip out tv? I have the silver one from Sony, it looks very nice because it is silver like the dash. Yes it looks a little crazy when the screen isn't out but I leave mine out for the most part and it covers the hole well. I have a Sony MP3 changer also, and a PS2 the ps2 is under the drivers seat and the changer is under the passenger seat. Everything is working out well with it setup this way.... hope this helps.
Tiffany :)
