Brakes and rotors

Hey guy. Tell me if this is common. My 08 sport has 24k on it and needs to rotors turned again. My wife drives this car and needless to say isnt a speed freak and doesnt slam the brakes. I had them turned about 4 months ago because they were warped. Now the wheel shakes and they thump horribly under even the lightest braking. Any ideas? I am sure the dealer will fix it but this is kind of a pain.

Thanks,

I had then turned once under warranty. You can only turn rotors once. When the vibration came back I upgraded to SP slotted rotors and pads. Better braking, no more chance of vibration. This happened on my Nissan Titan too, and the permanent fix was the same for it.

The OEM rotors are trash. This is why I went with replacing rotors and brakes all the way around with Centric parts. I know one guy who had his rotors replaced twic w/in 15k on his CX-9 in the DC area. I have not clue where the OP lives, but I am well versed in replacing brakes and rotors if help is needed.

I have this issue too on my 08' Touring AWD. Had the rotors turned at 30k and all was super. Now at 38K and they beginning to start up again and I do not brake super hard but sometimes in mild agressive sport driving (drive2).

Regardless, these rotors shouldn't warp this quickly. My guess is they have more than one vendor with quality issues or material/process issues that result in abnormal wear/heat distribution.

I can already see aftermarket rotors and pads to effectively handle the weight of this beast coming to a smooth, controlled stop.....

Can someone tell me what the warranty covers with this? I just noticed a slight vibration under braking. I have less than 7,500 miles on my 08 GT AWD.

Thanks.

Brake pads and rotors are covered by 1yr/12K, if I recall correctly.
However, talk to your dealer nicely, they might be nice to you as well.

Besides, most rotor issues are not caused by over-heating. They are caused by pad dust accumulating or over-tighten bolts. Make sure the inside surface is cleaned before putting on wheels. I have mine for 26K miles. Not a single problem with my rotors.
I rotate my own tires.... clean inside surface and torque the bolts properly.

I just rotated my tires and now feel the pulsating/wobbling feel of the brakes. I torqued the bolts @ 105lbs. Is this correct?

105lb is at the upper limit.
I believe it is recommended at 75ft-lb to 105ft-lb.
I do 85-90ft-lb as an average.

As I mentioned above my brakes started to pulse around the time I reached 7,000 miles. When I checked the rotors the inside surface felt like a race track with grooves.

I called my dealer and explained to them that I have two child seats in the back and that my wife doesn't really push the car, etc. They told me to bring it in to take a look at it and that it may be covered under the warranty.

I dropped the car off last Saturday. After a few hours, I got a call from the dealer and was told that the rotors were in such bad shape they decided to replace them under the warranty instead of resurfacing.

I spoke to the mechanic who performed the work on the car. He told me that based on the wear on the pads being very minimal and the fact the outside surface of the rotors were smooth whatever happened wasn't due to us abusing the brakes. He said it was most likely from driving the car for a very short period of time in the cold weather without giving the components a chance to go through their proper heat cycles.

I think he was right on the money about that since this past winter, on most days, I drove my daughter to daycare and came home. The whole trip took less than 12 minutes.

Btw, I don't believe my problems were due to over torqued wheels since up to this point the wheels hadn't been removed from the car since I purchased it.

Anyway, sorry for the long post. Here's the picture of the right side rotor I was able to take. SSPX0657.webp

Those spots on top are pieces of the rotor that actually broke apart.

WOW that looks horrible. I am glad that you were able to replace those rotors just in time before your children or your wife got into an accident. That is definately manufacturing defects without a doubt!

I had the same exact problem with a few cruisers at work, non of which are taken on short trips. I think it's just crappy metal in the rotors.

I got my 08 Touring after the car sit at the dealer's parking lot for 5 months. Within one week, I noticed vibration of the braking and requested the dealer change the rotors. Now, after less than 2 years and 12k miles, the brake vibration occurs again! BTW, my wife drives the car to do some errands with my babies.

Has any one got the experience to change the rotors by DIY? Any suggestions? Thanks!

It looks like all of you have 08 models, so is this just isolated to 08 or has anyone with 09's and 10's had problems?

I have an 07 and have had rotor issues. I am not hearing anything about the 09's and 10's, but not sure that there would be a new part # for the year. Rotors are not something OEM that gets changed unless there is a big issue or recall.

Magiccat, as for DIY, there are many of us that have posted here that have changed our won brakes. Take a look at some of the good DIY posts w/ pics. If you have any questions before or after we will be glad to assist.

Thanks! Have any idea about the torque for these bolts?
