Ok so my pads are worn otu, well i jsut moved from dalals to okc so all my tools are packed and hell if i know which box there in, so i just figure ok i'll go have someone do it, cant cost to much...or so i thought

i drive by rapid muffler and they have a sign in the window that says free brake inspection...so i take the bait and get my fre inspection.

$107.99 for front bendix ceramic pads + $52.30 R&R
$107.99 for rear bendix pads + $52.30 R&R
$65.37 to turn front rotors
$66.37 to turn rear rotors
$49.03 to flush brake fluid

this comes to a grand total of $517.74 with tax.

what the hell causes it to be worth $258.23 in labor?

note: i didn't have them do it, so my brakes are still shot to s***.

my sister just paid $370.00 to have her rears done, including new rotors. I will do the front for her soon. I was surprised that it cost that much, but foreign car brake parts are expensive (especially at the dealers).

the $518 that you paid does not seem that but although it is expensive.

My recommendation is doing it yourself. Even with OEM pads, you will still come out ahead. All of these shops try and rip people off. Hell, they want $65 bucks to turn 2 rotors....you are almost halfway there towards just replacing them. Check out www.mazdaformance.com

They don't have the rotors listed, but they will be around $120 for a set.

usually i would but i was thinking i didn't want to dig through all the boxes to find my tools, looks like i better start digging, for $525 i could get the RR racing big brake kit then be alot ahead of what i would be paying them to put stock stuff on it.

by the way, wagner lifetime pads at o'reillys = $36 a pair front and rear.

You can buy the hawk pads for $110 shipped (all 4 corners), and get nice slotted or slotted/drilled rotors for $200 plus shipping (all 4 corners), and do the work yourself. Flushing the brake lines would be a good thing to do but you don't 100% needed, if your going to have it done you might as well put in stainless steel brake lines.

Did you get my PM about the farmers branch show this weekend? I would like to possibly enter in it if its not too late...

Even if you had to go to Sears and get a new set of tools you would come out ahead!!!! :) LOL

cool, let me know on if its too late to register or not, and I might show up. We should plan to go in together to get a spot next to each other. I remember your car at HIN, I think I might have even said hi to you.

What is the name of the show?

so are you saying that barring you do your own install work.... it costs less to upgrade the pads AND cross-drilled rotors?

exactly, shop around for the best quality/price match and do the labor yourself. Even when buying the same exact expensive parts, it will cost less in the long run because of no labor charges. I bought new hawk pads and am considering new rotors while I am at it. The rotors are the easiest part, they just slide on.

its not to tolate you can register at the event, its at josey ln and valley view in farmers branch. i plan on getting there at 9 so i can get it cleaned up, and i dont think it had a name i think its just a small car show meant to bring auto zone business or something. figured i might as well while im down. gives me an exucse to detail the three.

So its at the autozone there? and can you PM me a number to call? Maybe your number too so I can call you when I am near. I really want to go to this one because its right by my gf's house and she wants to make it out to a show sometime.

Hey guys back on topic right quick...:D ... My brakes are pretty bad.. and im not tryin to spend that much for someone else to do it... I wanted to up grade my rotors/pads too... so.. to do it your self... all you have to do is take the old ones off and put the new ones on right?? My boyfriend replaced his on his legend by himself.. so ill get him to do it... but i just wanted to make sure there wasnt anything else youu have to do...

Someone posted about flushing the brake lines and changing them... do you have to do that?? how hard is it to replace them???
thanks for your guys help!!!

You may now carry on about the track day...LOL

It's not hard to do, and you dont *need* to flush the brake lines, you dont even need to mess with the brake lines if you dont want to.

Follow the instructions in the mazda workshop manual here: http://protege5.ugly.net/#brakes

They don't mention to machine the rotors in there but people say its a good thing to do each pad change.
