Box progress.

I am finnaly on summer break so I got to work on my trunk of doom today.

My amp willl be sunken into a false floor (so far it seems I will only have to raise it a 1/2" or so) with a removable plexiglass cover. I will only use the cover in the event I am trying to show off my Slowtege. I weighed everything and so far I am only slightly heavier than the stock MSP sound system.

Here's what I got done after work so far...

The last image shows the reason why I don't mind losing my spare donut.

I am not sure, the stock setup weighs a lot more than I thought it did, and what I have so far isn't a much as the stock rack. I am doing everything in 1/2" MDF it seems. I am still going to seal the bottom of my trunk to keep the moisture out.

i guess what they mean by that sticker is if you get a front flate, move ur rear tire to the front and spare the back,
I STRONGLY recommomend u dont cover ur spare tire, i foudn out the hard way with my system, i was 2 hours away from home on side the highway, couldnt get to my spare..

other than that ur box looks great i had mdf boxes, then my flat happened, so i am switchin to fiberglass boxes and ampracks..

any who, are u gonna just carpet the boxes??

There is no way that box when loaded with 2 subs along with an amp rack will weigh "slightly more than stock" unless there were secret lead weights in the stock system.

Even 1/2" MDF can get heavy, btw 3/4" is recommended for minimal flex, but since you're not going the sealed approach you might be ok. 3/4" birch is also a stronger, lighter alternative...not sure how it compares to 1/2" in weight though.

Other than that, looking good.

That's why I have AAA. I know what they mean about not having the spare on the LSD, but spares are for suckers. I can't be all bling bling with a donut.

And, I am going to carpet the whole thing in a nice black carpet. I am making a new floor anyway because I spilled a tank of gas on the stock capret and it's ruined.

Sure AAA can tow your car but if you're far from home they're just going to take you to the local tire repair shop...and if its late at night, you're going to have to trouble a family member to come get you or you'll be sleeping in a motel room until the morning. Not having a spare can quickly become a nightmare.

I've contemplated removing my spare many times but for a daily driver it just isn't practical.

Well, you can always put the spare in your trunk on top of the amp rack any time you plan on driving more than 20 miles from home (I forget what the max distance AAA will tow is).

Oh man, you gave me an idea. There's actually room on the top of the box for the spare. I can hide it too with a fake wall around it. Thank you for making me think of that.

3/4" birch plywood is usually available at Home Depot or any other home improvement store.

If they don't have that you can go with 3/4" MDF. 1" MDF will be mad heavy and is unecessary.

Pick up some wood glue and coarse thread drywall screws (#8 or #9 I think) while you are there.

3/4" birch plywood is only about $3 more per sheet than MDF right now in my area. well worth it, IMO, when considering the weight difference, since it's about half the weight of MDF. it splits and chips easier, though.

There is no difference in SQ. They are just about equal except birch is lighter.

Maybe it is #6, I forget.

the differences in the wood come from how they resonate. you either need to have enough mass to keep the wood resonating below the freq range as you are using for the sub (MDF), or have it stiff enough that it resonates above the freq range you are using (birch).
