boosting the boost on the msp...?

Hi guys, since mazda were very conservative with the boost factor (around 6psi) any turbo expert here like stou or spooling mp3 who can tell us what well have to do to crank that up to 8 or 9 psi and have decent power for a TURBO CAR... with something like 180 HP or more to the wheels...

I dont know a lot on turbo cars, will a boost controller will do the trick? if so, how much approx ? 300$ ? is this just as simple as turning a screw to up the boost? do the boost controller installation will have to void the warranty because it will permanently alter any original part or we can put that "reversable".
Do you think that well be able to put that on the car and make it almost "stealth" so if we have a problem we just remove it from under the stereo and replace an original hose or whatever?

explain please if you have time....

Thanks!
;)

I talked to a Mazda Corp. rep at an autoshow recently and he didn't seem to know anything about tamper-proof clamps. He said that upping the boost to 9 lbs shouldn't do any damage as Callaway had tested this with no real problems. And legally, Mazda can't void the warranty unless engine malfunction/failure can be directly attributed to the modifications.

From IS300.net:

WIll aftermarket parts affect the warranty of the car?

No. Federal law prohibits a dealer from voiding your warranty just because you are using aftermarket speed equipment, with only two exceptions: the warranty can be voided if the aftermarket part causes damage or adversely affects the emissions or the emissions system. In recent documents produced by the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association), a trade association-representing specialty automotive parts manufacturers, and the following quotes have been extracted:

"The vehicle manufacturer is not allowed to void the vehicle warranty just because aftermarket equipment is installed on the vehicle. This protection for consumers is the result of a parts self-certification program developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA).

"Under the program, if a parts maker completes the EPA process of self-certifying its parts, the vehicle manufacturer cannot void the warranty even if the certified part has failed and is directly responsible for the warranty claim. In cases where such a failed aftermarket part is responsible for a warranty claim, the manufacturer must arrange a settlement with the part manufacturer, but the new vehicle warrant is not void under the law.

"If the failure to honor a claim involves the new-vehicle warranty, and it appears that the manufacturer is improperly denying a claim, the incident should be reported to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC is responsible for monitoring compliance with the warranty law; the agency's telephone number is 202/326-3128."

I'm hoping the Mazdaspeed franchise will eventually release something to allow msp owners to up the HP some. Shouldn't be too hard now that it has a turbo....right?

I have no idea what I'm talking about :)

So they claim to be tamperproof clamps on the wastegate line. That doesn't mean you still can't cut the line and tee in a bleed. ;)

i know about tamper proof but the question is about boost controler, where do they plug? will it need to "scrap" tamperproofed wastegate?

SPOOLIN Where you? ;-)))))))))))))

well the engine is certainly stronger than the spec V engine...the Spec V engine can only take about 6-7 psi of boost....but that makes 275 to the wheels :)

But yea...that's stupid tamper proofing everything, stupid mazda -.-;

actually, thats pretty smart of mazda.. they are just covering their own ass so that when johnny protege ups the boost to 15 psi and blows the motor (which he will), the rebuild wont be on their dime (warranty work)..

now you just have to be sure you know what you're doing before upping the boost, because you have more to lose..

all you would need to up the boost is a manual boost controller set at 9 psi.. but first you will need to wait for someone to figure out how to bypass the tamperproof wastegate clamps, or take the initiative yourself..

also, it seems a piggy back controller will be needed to overcome the fuel cut off above 10 psi.. thats probably going to be the biggest nuisance for guys that want to make big power (12+ psi).. then again, if you are going through the trouble of rubuilding the motor with stronger, more boost friendly internals, it probably wont be a big deal..

what i'm wondering is does the mazdaspeed protege use the same 2.0 liter engine as the mp3 and protege5? will the oem mazdaspeed turbo and supporting hardware bolt right on to an mp3 or p5 motor? that would be nice...

Also you have to remember the easiest way to get some HP is the downpipe/exhaust.. I hope to have some dyno proof of this sometime as soon as I get my freakin car..

dammit.. i just read this:

- The turbo manifold is not for sale, it is only available as a replacement. The dealers have to provide the VIN of the Mazdaspeed Protege to order it, and then must the return the original manifold to Mazda.

bummer.

wow.. maybe i should take 5 minutes out of my day and read the first few posts on that thread and answer my own questions..

looks like the "turbo conversion" upgrade is oiut of the picture.. oh well, that would have taken some of the fun out of it anyway...

From what I read yes the MSP uses the exact same 2.0 L engine with nothing major done to the internals, nothing to make is stronger.

Mazda Speed WILL be releasing the exact same turbo kit for I think $1000 US (last time I read, this was like a few months ago) that will be covered under warrenty.

i think $1000 is a little on the cheap side there...

even if that is true, which i dont think so...

I'm with Dexter. We've pretty much established that a bolt-on Mazdaspeed turbo package is out of the question, as well as just buying the parts and doing the conversion on your own. The above quote is dubious at best.

There are always way to get around it. Study up and you will find out ways to raise the boost without disconnecting anything. The tamper proof clamps are only on the IC pipes by the way.

well i think ill wait till we get them and someone find a way to boost that to 8 or 9 psi to do the same thing, because im no good in mecanics...

ideally, a way that dont destroy anything so we can get the car back to standard setup for servicing would be cool!

No one is paying attention to me saying this but I'll say it again. The best mod to do if you don't want to void the warranty is to get a 3" exhaust made from the turbo back. This will let it spool faster, and it will also slightly raise the boost without touching the turbo or IC pipes. I will almost guarantee you will gain more than 10hp at the wheels if you get a 3" exhaust.
