I'm new to the site. I got my msp not too long ago and I wanna slap a perrin boost controller on. But I'm understanding that I would need to modify the ecu after install. If so, any suggestions on how to reprogram the ecu?

unfortunately you cant really reflash the stock ecu (aside from the dealer reflash for 2003.5). You'll either need a piggyback or standalone. search ssafc or unichip. make sure you have a wideband and supporting mods before increasing boost

Well I'm looking to pick up a stand alone ecu for the mods I'm gonna be putting in. Any suggestions on the ecu

It really depends on how much boost you're talking. If its anywhere between stock and 10psi, you don't need 440cc injectors or a new fuel pump.. If you want to go higher, then you need to consider not only upgrading the exhaust and fuel delivery system, but forged internals as well. Sure you can run 14psi on stock internals, but eventually you'll be another victim of the zoom-zoom-boom. But whatever you decide, an AFC is a must... there's usually a few floating around on the marketplace.

As far as boost controllers; I know a lot of people use them, and it makes adjusting boost very convenient. But they are usually always accompanied with boost spikes. These boost spikes aren't usually good, especially when combined with pre-detonation on an improperly tuned engine. My suggestion is to get an adjustable WGA and adjust your boost that way. This will make your waste-gate more responsive, and lessen if not eliminate boost spikes. Some would argue that the spikes are good and help give extra pull. But for me its not worth having to swap out a blown motor.
