I think if you painted the entire tail light black that would look hot. I had a yellow '91 Camaro and had the tails painted black. I got lots of compliments and thought it looked bad ass. Check out the Camaro in the top right:

i say go with black or red overlays or paint them like i did. yellow might look cheesy and kinda weird. i've seen red out overlays on a couple yellow msp and i liked them. I painted mine black because it is sorta the theme of the car. bluebatmobile i think made reverse light overlays but where to light imo

Id say go with red overlays. thats what i want to do when i buy the stock tail lights. till then i have these APC ones that are going to get trashed ASAP
