Blew up my speed6

Well boston got tons of rain last week and I was driving down the highway and went through what I thought was a small puddle and within seconds my car just died and would not turn over. Turns out I hydrolocked my engine. :( gonna be 2-3 weeks before i get my car back with a new engine... I should of listened to the warnings about the mazdaspeed cai. I really loved having it on the car but will never want to risk doing this again. Is the cpe cai any safer or do I run the risk of doing this again?(bang)

Same thing happened to me, also with the Mazdaspeed CAI, invested in a Injen Hydroshield (i think it was like 10 bucks) and I've never had an issue again and we just had a hurricane here in Tx recently!!! Trust me, it works great!!

I can't believe this has happened to more than one person. I know the Grand Prix GTP's(supercharged) predominantly go with a CAI as there first mod and I've never heard of anyone getting hydrolock and that is a very big community. I ran a CAI with my Grand Prix through snow and puddles after the snow melted and I never even worried about hydrolock. I guess this car is a little more sensitive.

how big was the puddle. You have to submerge it to get it to hydrolock. Especially on the highway

Not true!!! My wife was driving and I got there afterwards (it happened on a day I took our other car to work) but it was still pouring when I got there. The puddle only went to my ankle! You shouldn't underestimate the strength of the motor sucking up air through that intake! What really does it is the splash from the tires into the vents cut into the fender well.

why dont we just tape up the inside of the fender where the vents are should solve our problem and im not talking duct tape.. im talking about nascar style 200 mph tape. ur still going to get plenty of air into the intake on the highway.. alot of these issues have happened on stock speed6's with just the intake... ive never heard of any problems with the cp-e front mount cp-e intake setup..if someone can prove me wrong so be it.

In the past three years that I've had my CP-E MAFci I've driven through winter snowstorms, slush, tropical storms, torrential downpours, etc. in just about every part of the country east of the Mississippi, and I have yet to experience any problems.

Results may vary with FI.

Wow, bummer. Hard to beleive it was little bit of water. Is you lower splash sheild gone? Can you see the ground from where your filter is/was?
I have thought about filling those vents in the wheel well myself. I know I am going to do it now, that or get that Cobb for winter.

really?? this was a huge debate back when i was in the protege community. one of the local guys here hydrolocked his civic with a CAI. yeah, it happens everywhere....must have been a good placement on the GTP or something then.

true.

this is why i have a piece of ductwork cut and screwed into my fender well ;)
i recommend this to ANYONE with a CAI.

the speed6 has a hole directly under where the filter goes. also, there are slits cut into the fender wall. so, there isn't a ton of protection to start with.

Geesh, the only thing the speed3 has is the slits in the fender. Other than that it is completely protected from the bottom.

even with the htdro shield jaxjeff almost hydrolocked his ms6. Thank goodness he cut it off as soon as he realized what was happening. About a cup of water came out of the throttle body when pip was removed! Cobb if/when they ever get their s*** straight is the route i'm going.

everyone already said it...but get a SRI. i actually got one for the monsoon season here so i dont have to worry about hydrolocking my car.

I have a Heat/Splash guard protecting my filter from direct water and debri contact. Cost me $40 and have had no problems through a winter and one of the rainiest May/Junes we've had in some time. Might help out if you choose to stick with the CAI after the rebuild. Sorry to hear about your crappy luck man.

Did it really need a new motor? My dad's hydrolocked his old blazer driving across a creek and I've hydrolocked my old sebring (clogged drain on the interstate) No CAI in either of these. But anyhow, we were able to get both of these vehicles running again with no issues. We took the spark plugs out, turn the motor a good bit to get any water out of the cylinders, changed all the fluids for good measure to make sure there was no water there. Hydrolock doesn't automatically mean "new motor".
