A little history. Is this car new to you? Year, mileage? Any recent maintenance, like Timing Belt?
What it sounds like is that your crank pulley bolt wasn't properly torqued/key was not installed properly if at all. Once that key shears, the crank pulley is able to spin free of the crank. Typically, this damage can be pretty significant, but may be repairable without replacing the engine/rebuilding with a new crank.
Can you answer the questions I posted, and tell me the level of your mechanical knowledge?
