Better Sub for Stock Enclosure + Stock Amp

:
2003.5 Ti MSP
Hey, just had a question on subs; I'm looking to upgrade the stock sub to a better one (when i cant tell if the stock one is blown or not thats prob not a good sign =P). I want something that i can actually HEAR while the car is running (my exhaust = the only bass i can hear) but it has to be able to run on the stock amp and fit in the stock amp/sub enclosure. I'm pretty set on either a JL 8w0, 8w1, or 8w3 but I dont know which to get (/ which is best for the stock amp) and I believe the only differences are wattage and ohms? I'm kind of an audiophile but on the technical side, I dont know anything about audio. . . i looked into it a while ago for my boat but i've forgotten all the basics. . . i just want something that sounds really good, hits hard (for an 8" at least), fits in the stock box, runs on the stock amp, and itd be nice if it wasnt REALLY expensive. . . Do you guys have any suggestions? thanks!

From everything I've heard (I had the MSP sub setup in my sedan) you'll be happy with that JL Audio. It will fit, it will work with the stock amp, and it will sound better than the Kenwood ever did. At least, that's what they told me.

bump. . . more than one reply would be good guys ;-). Between the 8w0, 8w1, and 8w3, what are the differences and which would be best in terms of both power and sound, and longevity of the stock amp? Help me out guys!

The JL's 8W0 and 8W3 will fit (not sure about the 8W1 but I don't see why it wouldn't) but you won't be able to use the stock sub grill as the 8W0 sits lower, and I'm pretty sure the 8W0's are discontinued.

I have a suggestion. READ THE STICKIES!!!!

README: Stock MSP Stereo Warranty/Issues/Upgrades

But to answer some of your additional questions, the stock amp puts out 80w at 8ohms or 120w at 4ohms. That means you want a 4 ohm sub to maximize output. You do NOT want a 4 ohm DVC sub. The amp produces the power so as long as the sub is 4 ohms and can handle 120w you should be good to go. Another spec to consider is sensitivity. A sub with 90db sensitivity will play louder than a sub with 87db sensitivity when given the same amount of power.

yeah, i read that sticky, i just want to know which JL sub I should be looking for - 8w0 or 8w3? Or maybe an 8w1 if i can find it - I think the 8w3 mounts deeper than the 8w0 - it still fits though? I just dont know becuase the 8w0 is rated for 75 watts RMS and the 8w3 is rated for 125 RMS - would the 8w0 distort with the stock amp? Isnt the stock amp rated to put like 250 to the sub? ahhh im just a poor noob who's lost his way! =P

250? nope. 80w RMS to the stock sub since it is 8 ohms. All of the JL subs are great and with the stock amp you shouldn't be worried about over powering any of them. If the 8w3 fits and you can afford it, that is the one to get. The others are cheaper variants that sacrifice some sound quality for price. If there isn't a 4ohm version in teh one you want, you can also get a 2ohm DVC and wire it in series for a 4ohm total load. Check out the Tuturials on JL Audio's website if you are confused about ohms.
