Any recommendations on reliable performance shops in the Northern VA area? I currently live in Fredericksburg but travel as far as DC regularly.

What are you wanting to have done? The protege is a very simple platform to work on and most jobs are best done under a shade tree, in your garage, or at a buddies house to save a fortune in labor.

Most shops don't typically cater to proteges either. If you want a good car for taking to a shop, I'd suggest something like a subaru or honda. haha

Thanks Jackie Chan, already have an s2k, planning on a subie platform here in the next couple years.

As for mods I do want, I'm just looking primarily for the best tuning. Basic bolt-on I plan on doing myself. I've done some research but is there an agreed upon plug and play or standalone?

There aren't currently any pnp or standalone options that make much sense. The split second and unichip are your best bets, but both will require a bit of wiring. (typical installs are only 6-10 wires)

I've had experience with Mach-v or P-tuning. They both specialize on performance and force induction. Both places staff is very friendly and knowledgable.
I had my car tuned at Mach-V.
I used to aways go to P-tuning for my alignments (until i found a shop that lets me use their rack after hours) .

I have been working some connections and talking with AMS performance about custom work. Anyone know of any AMS builds on Mazda's here at 247? I'll keep ya'll posted on what they can offer.

That's what I'm gathering. And I can respect that. I do most work as well, just not when it comes to the more complicated areas, such as tuning and custom building. I have always preferred standalone ems, usually have run different maps for octane, sometimes had fun projects involving special machining and welding, etc etc. I picked up my msp about 3 weeks ago and am enjoying a new fun toy.

I'll second PTuning, they dyno tuned my Z and I couldn't be happier with their service. I do some motorsports stuff with a lot of their employees and they're good folks behind the scenes as well. I can say positive things about MachV as well, though I've never had the pleasure of using their services.

Unfortunately no, it never quite made it to the road. Life got in the way and I wasn't able to finish the project. I'll probably start listing the items worth selling and scrap the shell. Would've been a great story.
