I want to know, first hand experience and model and part number for a sub upgrade for the stock MSP sub enclosure.I don't mind if I have to change out the amp,but i am tired of the weak distorting factory sub in my MSP.
I know this has been gone over before, but i am looking to see if there are any new opinions out there.
I WANT THE BEST! THE BADDEST! THE BOOM!
Well as good as it will get for an 8'' incher!
Matt

I didn't think the enclosure was the true problem here?I thought it was the bad choice of sub in the enclosure. And why is that sub too much for the enclosure?Amp change needed?

I had the jl in there then sold the sub. it really sounded great! just wanted something with a lil more thump.

Thats what i want..just a little more thump..and a LOT cleaner!
The stock sub is bad.I am tired of listening to distortion.I dont want to add a bunch of weight by putting in a new sub box though.
What sub was it?Model # ,etc?
Matt
Did you use the stock kenwood amp on it.Doid you re-wire it in any way?

I just blew my factory sub and was thinking about getting it replaced. What JL is this and is our amp strong enough?

I thought we had a pretty strong amp? My sub is gone too, was thinking about getting it replaced by mazda, but now im thinking of getting something new. I have never heard anything wrong with the enclosure either, what is the problem with that?

Matt

yes the amp is strong enough. The sub is w3v2 8 inches, is really the best you can find in that size .

Here's my choice - A good high-Q sub like a dual voice coil JL Audio 8" and a small chassis size amp that actually has balls and can take a lower impedance load. I'd recommend an Autotek 44 if you can find one. PM me if you want more info on which amp and which ohm voice coils to choose, because they need to be matched properly.

I have one JL 12W6 (dual 6 ohm voice coils) in the Escort GT and an Autotek 99 driving it. The voice coils are wired in parallel (3 ohm load) and with the amp bridged it "sees" a 1.5 ohm load, which allows the amp to run really hard. It is the sweetest and most accurate sounding combo I've found yet, and with a clean 1000+ watts driving it, it will flat out hurt you if you want it to. I've never heard a single 12 hit as hard as that combo does. I was thinking of swapping this stuff over into the MSP, but now you've got me thinking about just putting a JL 8" into the factory enclosure. The 8" would sound even tighter (at the expense of a bit of deep bass extension and boom) and would also save a ton of space. Hmmm...

Edit- Maybe I have the 12w3 in the EGT? It's been in for 4 years or so, and I can't remember which model it is. Either way, go JL. I've never heard another sub I liked more overall than those.

Best choice hands down for the stock enclosure is the JL Audio W3v2 8" sub. I had it in my stock enclosure to tide me over until I had my custom work done in the trunk. It's a BIG upgrade from the stock sub. Best 8" sub that will fit in that enclosure in my opinion.

Ok, dumb question time - which JL W3v2 do you get to use with the stock sub: D2, D4, or D6 (Dual 2 ohm, dual 4 ohm, and dual 6 ohm, respectively)?

Any local JL dealer will be able to get the sub or order the sub for you. There are no authorized JL Audio dealers online.

As far as Voice Coils, I believe I have the Dual 4ohm sub, but I am not 100% sure, I would have to check, but I think that is the most flexible in terms of wiring and making sure you won't overheat your amp.

Still in need of solid answers!

Where are the damn audio guru's at!

maybe u shouldve posted in the audio section

youll get some good explanations on why the stock enclosure sucks

Honestly I think my stock sub sounds ground. I messed around with the different settings on the radio and was finally able to make a nice, clean thump. I think there is a way you can turn the speakers off and just have the sub on...thats what I did to help maxmize the power of the sub as far adjusting the settings.
