benefits of the ACT street clutch

I was looking through Jersey_emts mazdaspeed aftermarket guid and I notice that he had ACT street clutches in there. What would be the benefits right off the bat with it and is it a good early install? Just curious, I don't really want to install it.

The ACT clutch holds more power. Also the engagement is more precise...but is harsher than the stock clutch.

It won't engage as smooth as the stock clutch. It won't be horrible like a race clutch but there will be a noticable difference.

the clutch grabs a lot harder so the engagement is gonna be rougher, meaning when you shift, you'll be more prone to a harsh shift. shouldn't be bad though if you get the organic one. don't get something like a 4 puck....WAY too much for daily driving.

Would a short throw shifter make any difference, and it can't be as bad as my old granny geared ford f-150 can it? Hell that was stupid. I wrote before I thought. And i'm to tired to go back and delete. It still shouldn't be like the ole f-150.

nope. no difference. the short throw shifter will do just that.....make the shift throws shorter. it won't do anything for how smoothly or how hard the clutch engages.

I don't guess it would be worth even installing to I get alot more horses running under the hood. Besides do you know what an average install would cost? Not counting buying the clutch.

ACT isnt the only ones making clutches for the MSP.
SPEC also makes clutches.

As far as i know, the spec clutch for the regular protege will fit the MSP, and is abotu 150 cheaper.
As long as the flywheel is the same size, it'll fit..

Don't change out the stock clutch until it comes time to do so.

As far as when that time comes, stick with a organic surfaced plate. Our cars don't like 4/6 puck configs due to the harshness of the engagement. Or at least that's what I've read.

I never planned on replacing the stock clutch. I was just a little curious about it. Beside it'll be a good investment way down the road, so I thought I'd go ahead and learn a little about it now.

It will be harsher, I hate the clutch on my msp, I have an ACT in my gsr and it is a bit more harsh, but still not enough. One of my friends has an 00 prelude with a jackson racing supercharger on it and he just put a 4 puck in it, not sure on the kind, but that clutch is very harsh, but I like it now that i've drove it a few times.

4/6 puck clutches are usually considered drag or race clutches due to the hard engagement, and clutch feel. Theyre streetable of course, but most people dislike daily driving them, especially in traffic.
But they hold a ton of power, so if youre building a drag monster protege, then its worth it, but id just get a spec stage 2, or an ACT street disc, and call it a day for your mildly modded protege, msp or otherwise.
Of course, check the tq numbers the clutch is designed to hold, and compare that with your dyno numbers, or goals. :)

dont get a racing clutch with pucks on it. it will tear into your flywheel.

and you will have lots of chatter...go with a Xtreme Pressure Plate with Street Disc.

I have a fidanza flywheel, and a clutchmasters stage I, which is the ACT II equivalent, holds up to about 250 ft/lbs. Engagement is noticably quicker and more sudden, not as gradual as the stock one. It's not horrible, it's just I can feel the sudden clutch of it hitting the flywheel now, with the stock I couldn't. Oh, and it grabs.

I have the spec stage II and it's great. It really puts the power down and is rated for over 300 Ft-lbs of torque. Feals pretty much like stock, except it doesn't slip. For $329 you get a cheaper one and yet higher torque rating.

Deffinatly wait until you need it, cause it will probably run you 350+ for the install. My friend who helped me is a mechanic and the book allows 4.7 hours for the install, so it's not cheap unless you know someone. :D

Hell at least some of you guys got your clutch. I ordered my street disc a month ago and when it finally got here it was a 4puck. So I had to send it back and now it will probly be another month before I get my streetdisc. Oh, and my install will cost less than 200
