Just got a base Mazda3 i this past Saturday. I did do a search on this forum & here. Only found that one guy in Aussie. So is it just not possible to make this work in the base car? Would it be (could it?) just as simple as buying the factory top-o-the-line radio with the info button & other hardware is already in the car (Although I would imagine, that even the base model car computer "knows" what the milage is in software, I just did not buy the hardware to display it).

to make the trip work you have to depress the button and hold it for 3 seconds and it will reset. you also have 2 trips a "A" and a "B". i only use one anyways

That's the trip odometer. A trip computer is different. Is calculates fuel economy, miles to empty, trip miles, etc.
Honestly, I didn't know that any models of the 3 had that offered. Can't help you with a retro-fit option but you can get the same functionality (and more) from a ScanGauge.
