They discuss heelstrike vs forefoot strike but nothing about barefoot vs shoe running. . .

Im actually going to talk to my bio professor. Could be a cool research opportunity this summer. Tons of articles out there but no good ones examining true distance runners to really see the pro's / con's of barefoot vs shoe running.

The fact is shoes with higher, padded heels pretty much make you land harder, and mainly on your heels.

I often thought about this being a research paper for me as well.

When I was in college (20 years ago) there was a girl who was visiting my roommate who was a barefoot runner. She had developed very thick skin on her feet. At one point I saw her run across a parking lot covered with cinders (very sharp pieces of glassy material from the furnaces).

Along with these has anyone tried the huarache running sandal? link here

Being a total cheap ass and after thinking about it I decided I am going to make my own pair. I am going to take a pair of cheap flip flops from Target, remove the rubber straps and just use a shoe lace and follow the same lacing pattern as in the link.

Thoughts or Comments?

So the past 2 weeks I have been building up my mileage running barefoot. I did one run last Friday that was 10min, no problem right. Well Sunday I went out and did 15min. half way in I started getting open sores on my feet. The second to the smallest toe on each foot and one the size of a quarter on the mid sole of my right foot. (It's like the skin was just getting rubbed off like by sand paper)

By the end of my run the one on my mid sole was pretty bad to the point of bleeding. I can't figure out for the life of me why all of the sudden this would happen. I was running at a little swifter pace but don't feel my form was any different then before. I felt my feet were pretty conditioned but I guess not.

My progression was just adding 5min of barefoot every other day. It was probably my 5th or 6th run and I was doing fine with it until this happened. I was running on side walks so was this possibly the cause of it? maybe I'll just have to stick to the hurache sandals.

end rant, thanks for listening/

Not enough time has passed. The padding of your feet build up gradually. You know when the pads of your feet are thickening, when you feel a tingling from new skin generation..

yeah I think I had a blister prior to the run and it just tore open. either way I'm not giving up on this, just need a little patience.

Awesome video of a running coach breaking down the proper mechanics of natural running:

I ran 5 miles for the first time barefoot a couple of Saturdays ago for my black belt exam (directly afterwards went back to the dojo to do seven two-minute rounds on the punching bag). Granted it was around a track, it marks the furthest I've ever ran barefoot.

I'm looking for 5K and 10K events to sign up for now.
