bad gas milage

I am running ngk iridiums in my car. i thought that would be the problem also so i put a fresh pair in, but go thte same results the plugs in my car are about 3 weeks old now......

^^ I think that might have been from when I tried to run a 6 heat range plug when I wasn't turboed though.. not exactly sure. but yes, black is the color of choice for a Protege spark plug.

the upper plug doesn't have more than 2k miles on it.. as you can see from the electrode it isn't worn down, just incredibly filthy.

Just for reference,
I took my plugs out last night and put new ones in. They were not at all filthy like that. I realize that our motors run extremely rich at WOT, HOWEVER, after you start cruising around again any excess fuel is normally burnt off (if the plug is the proper heat range).

That is a sign of 1: a motor that runs extremely run even at low throttle/ low load condition or 2: a spark plug that isn't hot enough to keep the plugs clean (the more probable like you mentioned).

I think the non turbo plug is more of the NGK 4 range plug, the MSP is a 6 range stock, and I just basically put 7 range into mine since I am increasing the boost a little.

Yeah that's when I ran a 6 heat range in my car for maybe 1000 miles.. oh and stock non-turbo FS-DE spark plug is a 5 heat range copper plug.

My bad - thought I saw people runnign the 4s.

Wouldn't have thought only 1 heat range would make that much differance though. Hmmm.

Might have also been a pic from that time both of my spark plug wires went bad and also the boots weren't sealing properly and water got to my spark plugs.. the two plugs were dripping with gasoline when I pulled them >_< stupid stupid sparkco wires.

can you please educate me on the heat range and what plugs fall under what heat range.....i am definitely lost about that.(homework)

i was doing some seraching on the forum about the plugs brainmpt5 says msp should go colder not hotter.....and the iridiums i have are the step colder.......so what should i do?

btw i still dont understand the heat range i am just going off research.

The heat range is the first number in the plug part number for the NGK plugs.

for example: ZFR6F-11 (the plug I'm using right now) is a 6 heat range plug. A higher number is a "colder" plug.

so you have a 6 heat range plug in a non-turbo Protege? it might run ok but it didn't run that well for me, even with the MP3 ECU, underdrive pulley, jdm intake cam, vtcs removal, cold air intake, header + midpipe + catback, and a few other performance mods.

I am turbo. i believe i am in the 6 heat range. like i have listed b4. Hi-Boost FMIC. Injen CAI, Nology Wires, Iridium plugs nothing else i have done is really performance....mainly suspension work

btw thank you for helpin me understand the heat ranges(rockon)

I noticed I was getting bad mileage on a couple tanks.. like 190 miles onm about 11 gals. which wasent normal for me. I thought well maybe something is messed up and decided to try to max my speed out to burn away any debris or blockage, ( i know i sound really dumb, was jsut an exsuse to drive fast) anyways on a rarely used, but new asphalt country road I got her up to about 130. slowed down and went home. the next day my check engine light was on lol... took dealer, front o2 sensor went bad. and it was about 4k miles since the last oil change and I also checked my tire pressure was un even all over the place like front right was 10 psi less the driver rear. anywyas got the sensor replaced, oil change and tires rotated and set to proper psi and I have been back to my normal avg of 31 mpg. my only mod is the Injen intake

i have a fmic, midpipe, cai, boost controller, and a dsm afc and i think i get about 25 mpg...driving at about 70 to 75 mph

Just got 390 from full to E light. at that point its about 11.5 gallons so anything over 30 I am so happy about
