Backing Up and a Bang

Well, heck! I went to back up in my 2014 Mazda3 stick shift, there was a bang, and the car won't reverse. The forward gears are fine but I can scarcely buzz around town only going straight ahead (although I do like a challenge). I want to take it to a transmission shop for diagnosis. My questions are: 1) have you experienced anything like this? 2) what are your thoughts on it being as simple as a snapped cable? I love this car and want to keep it but, well, fixed income, etc. Thanks for reading.

I think you should hope it's something simple, like a snapped cable. It could be.

I had a clutch cable snap on me once, but the shifter cables haven't failed me. That doesn't mean yours won't.

Have you looked at the cables under hood to see that they are all ok?
Only 2 cables used in most manual gear boxes.

Also have a look under the center console at the shifter assembly.
Same thing.
Look at both cables and make sure all is good.

Last try to manually shift the transmission at the top of the transmission manipulating the shifter mechanism itself.

All the above I've personally done on my manual to check all is good so see if this may identify your issue with reverse.

good luck. 🤞

Oh, excellent advice...we're on it. Thank you! Will report on our - hopefully - success.
