Ok, the lock itself goes up and down when you do it manually. However when you do it via the control on the driver's door, the lock does not respond, only a funny clicking sound. Any ideas?

I'm having this exact same problem with my drivers side door and my rear passenger door. I'm really hoping somebody on here knows how to fix this.

Hey rusty nuts, do your doors also make this funny clicking sound? Something is not engaging and I'm not sure what or how easy/difficult it is to fix. My car has what appears to be the common P5 problems: rust, seatbelt buckle and now this.

It's the door lock actuators. There's a plastic gear inside the actuator that breaks. Unfortunately, you have to replace the entire actuator, but fortunately not the whole lock assembly. It's not too difficult to do. Mostly irritating more than anything. Onlinemazdaparts.com has them around $40 each.

There's a guy from Australia selling a replacement of that plastic worm gear/cog that has broken and causes that rattling noise. The title of the current auction on ebay is:
Door Lock Actuator Repair Cog Shaft Large Mazda Protege <-$33 USD + shipping

I have the same problem with my pass. Front door... Its a good thing its a cheap fix for such a common problem haha

Selling the plastic shaft gear that breaks on 98-02 Protege door lock actuator

I'm selling the plastic shaft gear that breaks on the door lock actuators (all 4 doors take same gear) on Ebay right now. Just type "protege gear only".
