AWR Oil Pan DOES NOT WORK with Cometic Gasket!!!

Just a heads up to anyone who i's gonan get the AWR pan, use RTV to seal it. The Cometic gasket for the oil pan sucks. It lines up alright, but there's no room for the pan to tighten against it properly. Yes, I used longer bolts (as required with the AWR pan) and NO they are not bottoming out, and YES I torqued the pan down evenly and tightly... It's the gasket combo, trust me guys. Use RTV on your AWR pan, so it doesn't leak like a siv...

Yep, it sucks on the stock pan too. In fact, I wouldnt bother buying their gasket kit as most the gaskets suck compared to OEM. Only things worth using were the valve cover, cam seals, rear oil seal, and valve seals.

All I used were the cam seals. And that's only cause I forgot to order them from the dealer. Plus they only gave me 15 valve seals...

I built a motor with the cometic oil pan gasket and didn't notice any major leaks.

For some reson, mine had a ******* HOLE in it between the 2 short bolts above the DP (I'm assuming it's liek the facroty pan so you can break the seal cause it was threaded) but anyway, the Cometic gasket didn't seal that for s***, so it leaked there, and also where the little "outdent" is by the oil pickup, it leaked out of the top of that pretty bad...

I didn't even know there was a Cometic gasket for the oil pan.. wow I'm a n00b. I used some black RTV on my pan and not even a hint of a leak so far.

Ya, RTV is what the car comes with. More and more, RTV is becoming the "new age" gasket, and fewer and fewer actual gaskets are being used.

Also, OEM Mazda have 2 diff part #s for exhaust and intake valve seals while the cometic sticks them all in one pack.

All the OEM water gaskets are metal based and seal better than the Cometic supplied ones. The waterpump, thermostat housing, and water outlet, I would definitely use OEM over the Cometic. Dirtysouth MSP said he had a problem with the intake mani gasket sealing as well.

The problem with the Cometic oil pan gasket is that it soaks up the oil and then swells and then leaks since it's made of cork. Even the tech at Cometic didn't understand why they supplied a pan gasket when OEM calls for Permatex Gray which is heavy duty grade sealant.

Werd, a lot of the Cometic gaskets got tossed into the trash. "Superior materiels" my ass. Intake gasket was nothing like the OEM and that oil pan gasket is a joke. Also, Cometic must have forgotten about the crank seal cuz they just left it out. The only thing I would buy from them again is the head gasket. Other than that most of their seals/gaskets are no different than the ones you will get from Napa, Autozone, O'Rielly, etc.

Anyone have problems with their AWR Oil Pan leaking from where the mounting surface is welded to the rest of the oil pan? I have very slight leaks coming straight out of the welds in a couple of spots!(protest)

They are sending me a new one and I am returning that... hope the new one is better. I don't know jack about welding, but I'm like a little kid when it comes to sealing things with glue and whatnot, MORE IS BETTER! I want thick beads everywhere, they reassure me :)

Khaosman, I sealed my seam with RTV where yours is leaking before it was filled with oil and it's fine. But I wouldn't mind a new pan myself to fix that clearance issue...

LOL, what you guys have almost no clearance whatsoever right there to the right of the drain plug either? I almost wanna just ditch the pan altogether, but I already paid for it and a baffled oil pan with higher capacity is ideal. If all my motor mounts were not solid, there is no way I would leave it on the car. If the motor was able to move it seems like it would just rip the pan right off of there.

Yeah who knows if it'll be any better though. I guess I'll be sure to RTV that seam on the new one.

But yeah, dirtysouth, minimal clearance. I have pictures of it somewhere in that gallery.

any chance you might have just roughed up the surface of the upper oil pan when you removed the stocker? My stock oil pan was stuck on like no other(4-5 times as stuck on compared to the oil pan in my new motor) and it wasnt pretty by the time I got her off my old motor so I made sure to use extra RTV swapping it over to my new motor. (i had to swap the upper pan to save me from tapping a oil drain on the na motor)

Heres a pic of the clearance issue. It's circled in red. Sorry the pic is kinda bad.
