AWD---The wheels are turning

Nice Justin! Guess when you say you are going to do something, you are going to do it. *mental note, never dare him to do anything...*

Are you going to have to cut the rear passenger floor boards to fit the rear in there?

Oh and Pics we need pics of the whole install :)
We won't really know about any major fabrication, but I doubt there will be any cutting of the rear floor pan involved. The only clearence concern I'm having looking at the pictures is with the driveshaft and the center channel of the car. If it clears then everything should be a piece of cake. It's going to be close though. If I have to make the center channel a little wider I'll bring out the saws-all and the arc welder.

Better warm up the saws-all and welder then.

The tunnel on the AWD cars is wider to accomodate the drive shaft.

Judging from the pictures and using the AutoEXE subframe brace as a reference, The centerline of the driveshaft looks to be about 2.5-3 inches over to the driver's side from the center-line of the car. Add on another 2 inches for clearence giving a maximum of 5 inches from the center-line of the car that I have to play with, give or take an inch or so. Also, from the picture of the rear differential, the driveshaft appears to be centered with the rear subframe meaning that if I have to modify the channel I won't have to modify the whole thing. Possibly just the small part from the firewall to the shifter. These are just more observations. Only time will tell. I should have the transmission in within a month for the preliminary test fitting without the driveshaft. This should tell me exactly how much space needs to be made if any.

I just contacted the company that will be doing the cryo-treating on the transmission and rear differential internals for me. He had some very interesting things to say. His company does cryo-treating for a lot of the Nascar teams. He gave me an estimate on doing my tranny and it sounds like I can get everything done for less than $200. I'm going to be talking to him a little more in the coming monthes as he also pointed out that cryo-treating some other things may prove beneficial as well.

turbop5 said it cost him 2000 to get his tranny cryo treated, and he put his transmission together himself x.x wtf

I even said "Wow" when he told me the price. I was expecting much more money. I'll be speaking more with him in the next few weeks. He said if I needed it done in a hurry it would cost more. He also said that he has been treating several clutches for drag racing and have found that it increases clutch life without any ill effects. He also treats brake pads and rotors and was told by several police agencies that instead of getting 8,000 miles out of the pads on the pursuit cars they were getting 23,000 miles on the treated pads.

If this guy does me right I'll start a new thread just for the cryo-treating info. Here is his website...

http://www.metal-wear.com/index.htm

I spoke to Roger at the Charlotte location.
I have actually dealt with him before. They also treat sporting goods and he used to come in my store all the time with info on cryo treating golf clubs. Have they moved, becuase according to the site they're in Mt. Ulla, not Charlotte??(uhm)

Good luck with your project!!!!!!!! I wanted to do this in 2002, but didn't have the guts to go through with it :( . Are you planning show and go or just go???

Concentrating on "GO" first. Then I can sleep it for a while and maybe make some money back. Then, if I haven't destroyed it, I might make it a show car again.

The AWD Capella is a manual shift where as the AWD Familia was only offered in an automatic. Even if I didn't mind driving an auto tranny it would still never be able to hold the HP #'s that I want to get when I'm finished.

Just had to put in my two cents about this post...I own a manual AWD Familia sport20 so it does exist. Just out of curiousity why arent you just looking to get the entire drive train from a J-Spec Sport20? Good luck dude.

When I first started looking to do this I called Corksport about it and voiced my concerns about being unable to find an AWD manual tranny. They said that they could do it and already had the transmission in the US. The transmission that they had came from a Capella and as far as I know it is the same tranny that is in the Sport20. This was all discussed 2 years ago. The Capella at that time was much easier to find salvage parts from and very few Sport20's had made it to the junk yard. Since they already had the Capella tranny here I pretty much told them to hold it until they could get me the rest of the parts.

Fair enough. Once again good luck and keep us all posted with progress. Someone asked me to post pics of my AWD drivetrain, this is in the works and don't know if it helps you at all (I m guessing you have already viewed all relevant info). Cheers.

Post them up. Anything will help, trust me.

One thing I did want to see...

Can you get a good pic of the floorboard near the firewall and possibly measure the distance from the kick panel to where the center channel is (on the left side of the car)? I'm worried that the I will have to widen the center channel in the car and I don't have much room to spare with the gas pedal being right beside it. I need to see how different it is. You might be my saving grace.
