AWD---The wheels are turning

Isn't it going to be cheaper to just import the freaking sport20?? No need to register it, cause you can just switch the vins.....

or am I smoking too much?
because of the HP he wants to run, having an AWD sport 20 wouldn't work, he'd end up having to change it from an auto to a manual, THEN rebuild the entire drivetrain after the tranny. He'd only be saving a little time, but not really money.

The more I think about it, it might have been just a Familia with a low power FS and all-wheel drive with the manual tranny.

Also, on the FAQ, the FS-ZE in the engines says G15MX-R tranny. Which, if you follow the coding on trannies, would be an AWD manual 5sp.

I don't know, but look at Familia stuff too, and looking farther back to 99 when the thrid gen was fisrt born, might net you some results.

Xel, I got the pictures from a board member with an AWD 99 sport20, he lives in Japan. his board name is Ichigo. He has a large collection of modification pictures that he has taken while working on his car, most of them interior pieces, and engine bay shots, but recently he upgraded to Autoexe suspension, and that's where I got these pics. He speaks English so I don't see why you can't PM him for any questions =)

Not sure if his car is auto or not, I'd guess auto tho. But as for a manual AWD car, I heard they were auto only as well, be something to ask Ichigo. You said you only searched for AWD manuals from 2001-2003, but the sport 20 awd has been around since 98 or 99 I believe
Very cool. I asked a long time ago in the foriegn section if there was anyone who had or knew someone who had an AWD Familia and got nothing. Thanks for keeping me up to date.

I meant 99-03..I even thought I went back and changed that...must have gotten caught up in other posts...Equinox I have to say you have been a big help.

Auto EXE to the rescue. Seems like they make all kinds of stuff for the AWD platform.

from what I can translate they are 3 inch hieght adjustable...178,000 yen or $1600 for all four...thank god I only need the rears...

First off, awesome ideas and good luck with your project. I got a couple of questions though on this drivetrain.

1. Is it permanent awd all the time like scubbie(yes) ? or is it awd like volvo s70 or ford escape(notcool) ?

2. are you getting three diffs for them? if so what kind?

3. auto tranny can hold the power you just have to build them up, too. Look at the new rs6 and amg E55(attn) , they're both automatic aren't they? I'm not a tranny expert, so I'm just wondering on this issue of why ppl are saying manual can hold more power than an automatic

4. Last question, how good is the awd system from Mazda:confused: Is it as good as the scubbie or audi?

Thanks:D

1. From what I can gather it is similiar to the Tribute 4WD which is primary FWD with a limited slip rear differential as well. I'm not an expert on exactly how the thing gets power from one end of the car to the other and I'm definitely not an expert on how the WRX works. I just figure having at least one of the back wheels pulling is better than nothing...anything else will be a bonus.

2. I'm only getting the one rear differential right now, but Corksport says they can get me more if I blow that one up. That is the stock one from the AWD familia

3. Manual can hold more power than an automatic for less money...and I hate driving automatics. Manuals are also much easier to work on.

4. Yet to be determined. No one knows, but hopefully we will soon. I'm having all the halfshafts and driveshaft rebuilt by the same people that built the 500hp halfshafts for us that GotZoom posted about. I'm also having the internals from the rear differential and the tranny cryo-treated before they go in the car so we may never know what the limit was stock.

if the AWD works like u said...FWD first and then AWD then its like subarus...once it feels the wheels sliping the rears will grab....

my .02cents

Talked to Edwin again. The Sport 20 FWD is only auto. AWD Sport 20 comes both ways...

Looky here!http://www.familia-sw.mazda.co.jp/spec02.html
I see it on the webpage, but I don't think that makes any sense. They don't offer a 2WD manual transmission on the Sport20 in Japan? Maybe they got it backwards. Not trying to argue hard facts, but it just doesn't seem to follow logic to me.

Awesome project.

Mazda should've brought the AWD vers. to the u.s. though now I rather let you be the only one in the u.s. with a AWD protege. show us pics whenever you get to a point where we can see thats its coming along.

thanks and keep up the good work,

How do you mean it doesn't follow logic?

The car that was in the pictures that were posted in this thread is a Sport 20 AWD 5 speed manual...

Ok...alright I finally found proof of the manual AWD in Japan. Cool video too. They didn't have the manual when I first started looking in 2001 listed on any of Mazda's websites (I remember being very depressed about that), but the car in these pictures has the older style J-spec headlights. Can anyone confirm a year on it? I'll ask Corksport about it next week. I guess that solves one mystery.

This website clarifies the whole "is there a Sport20 FWD manual tranny" issue. The Sport20 only refers to the 2.0l motor, but the BJ basic chassis refers to 13 different models with 3 different size motors. It appears that they didn't offer the manual FWD tranny on the 2.0l (Sport20) from the factory, only on the 1.5l. This is from a European site, but I'm assuming this applies to the Japanese market as well. I guess we should be lucky to get the Protege5 in a 2.0l manual FWD.

Derrick at Corksport said he might have a price for everything on Wedensday. More updates coming soon.

Good luck with your project. I would really like to see how you make out with the fabrication end. Good luck keep us posted(2thumbs)

The car in the pictures could be a 1.8 or 1.5 liter which isn't the Sport20, but that is irrelevent at this time. I was concerned about specific tranny codes and their compatability with the 2.0l motor. Looks like everything should be fine. Thanks to everyone who took time to search out all this info and increase everyone's knowledge on this subject.

If you're still humming and haaing about what to do with the exhaust, why not shorten it up, and do a side exhaust, and if you break from the headers into a dual setup, you wouldn't have to worry about having a large diameter pipe, then you could custom mold the side panleing and body work, to make the side exhaust look almost like it was meant to be, then your car would be even more unique, looking killer as hell. Just my suggestion. I think it's awesome someone is finally converting to the AWD version of the car, please tell us how well this works out, and what the final cost is. GOOD LUCK, and awesome on stepping up and doing this.

I've been thinking about the exhaust. I'm not going to worry about it at this point since it will be the last obstacle to overcome. The side exhaust would be cool, but I think it would attract too much attention. I think I can get the flat piping similar to Nascar to work. I just have to find someone who can bend me the conversion from a round pipe into a flat square one. No big deal.

Nice Justin! Guess when you say you are going to do something, you are going to do it. *mental note, never dare him to do anything...*

Are you going to have to cut the rear passenger floor boards to fit the rear in there?

Oh and Pics we need pics of the whole install :)
