AWD---The wheels are turning

yup yup...look for Turbo Matty P on turboford.org and I'm there!!

Racer Walsh stroker kit with forged internals and a new T3/T4 hybrid turbo w/ FMIC and custom Bob40 intake mani. I've got the 65mm TB and T-coupe brown-top injectors. custom 3" cat-less mandrel bent exhaust, C4 with shift-kit 8" rear with 3:73 traction-loc rear. Not a bad way to blow a couple grand if you ask me! Also, 90% of the money I spent on this project was in my Carrbed turbo motor. I was shooting for 250whp with a carb turbo and I kept blowing s*** up. Either the powervalve would blow out the carb or the head would crack. Either way I spent a couple grand just building three new carb turbo motors BEFORE switching to EFI.

Justin...good luck with this man...i remember you talking about it at the meet last summer...i can't wait to see that thing once it's put together...i'm sure it'll REALLY "feel" a lot faster than mine now ;)

I gotta say props man- building something different- I know a couple of evo owners that would definitely go dump some more money into their cars just hearing this conversation.

I don't know who told you that, but the Sport 20 did have all-wheel-drive in a manual tranny.

TheMAN found that out during research...
I've been searching webpage after webpage and I can't find any listing for a 5-speed AWD Familia anywhere. They did make one back in the late 80's (the GTX), but there is no hope of getting that tranny/motor in our car. Even checking Mazda of Japan's website they never list the 5-speed as an option with the AWD Familia from 1999-2003. I asked Corksport about this as well and they confirmed that there wasn't a 5-speed option on the AWD Familia. TheMAN has also been fighting me on this project saying from day one that it couldn't be done. I would think if they made a manual tranny AWD Familia he would have a little more confidence.

something I thought was hillarious was XelderX saying the STi only makes 230hp and the EVO makes more than that. That's great. Obviously you've done your research. Kudo's.
The STi is lucky to make 230hp ***at the wheels*** on anything but a dynojet dyno.
Don't even begin to talk to me about research. I've been reseaching this project for 2 years. Just because I can't rattle the exact HP for the EVO off the top of my head doesn't mean I don't know anything about what I'm doing.

wow so all it takes for 13.2s in the quarter mile is 230Whp.....wow, all this time I was wasting money trying to make power. I guess every hiboost automatic with good traction should be running low 13's also....they weigh less than the STi and make the same power.

Umm..last time I checked...stock STi's run low 14's

Edit...best I've found from a stock STi quarter mile on-line was popular mechanics listing a 13.52...EVO did 13.59

hahaha!!!
So you were 3/10's of a second too fast and I was 6/10's of a second too slow. I edited my post so it would be right and your still wrong.

Ah...finally...used that ignore function...I feel so much better now.

HAHAHA, he's going to ignore me!! Well, thats what happens when you try to save someone time and money.

XelderX, the point is, you're horribly misinformed about several things. If you think this project could even be done in a years time you're out of your mind. You better dedicate every minute and penny you have to working on this car. I wish you luck even though you're baby and can't take any CONSTRUCTIVE criticsm.

p.s. for the mods, I was planning on calling him a pussy, but I chose baby instead. just FYI.

Parked in my parents garage as we speak. I can get you a picture of another topless pinto (not where I got the idea, but he beat me to it). Mine will look almost identical.

for the record...I call my car a pinto but in actuality its a 1976 Mustang II....same pinto everything though...especially the 4 bangers. Good news is that the pinto block was made in bravil so it classifies as an import.

pics for Red

Here ya go man....this is similar to what I've got and what I'm doing.....his has ssome tacky roll bars, but mine will have a tonneau cover for the rear and individual small chrome roll bars behind the seats mounted through the fiberglass tonneau!

Imagine a car that tiny making 350whp with an automatic (built) and traction-loc rear....I'm all over the 12's!!

not in the long run....230whp is all it takes to run 13.5's?? huh...than my pinto should 11's when I put it back on the street.
Yeh. AWD=insane launchs.

I would lose bad to a STi from a stand still in my 200, but from a roll or on the highway I will simply leave it.

AWD sacrifices high speed performance for quicker 0-60 performance. Remember that with AWD, there are 4 wheels propelling the car foward instead of 2. So power is split up to all 4 corners of the car unlike FWD or RWD. AWD will ALWAYS have the greater drivetrain loss. Most of the STi dynos that I've seen were between 220-240 *to the wheels*. Most of the EVO dyno charts I've seen were around 220+/- before the flash and closer to 230+ after the ECU flash.

Stock WRX dyno (reminder; WRXs are rated at 227hp from factory)

If you took an AWD car and a FWD that ran the same ET, the trap speed of the FWD, in most cases, will be greater than the AWD car. Though a WRX may gain a decent gap on me from the line, I would murder it from a roll and even worst on the highway (starting at 40mph+).

not taking anything away from you, but all of the STi's I've seen ran very low 13s. Some have even claimed to hit 12.9 before. Stock WRXs usually run low-mid 14s

What he said.......even though I don't agree with the first post about "walking an STi from a roll"....I'd pay good money to see that!
