AWD---The wheels are turning

Oh yea...forgot to mention. I plan on using the car to make a lot of the money back. Stock rims and tires make for a good hustle anywhere.

FWIW, I have almost $7K into a 1976 Pinto four cylinder....however to my credit it's estimated to run 12's in the quarter. The difference here is I didn't spend X amounto f dollars to convert it 4WD by using the Ranger transfer case and axles.....could have, but just figured that enough was enough. You're concerned with "respect" from other tuners, but any STOCK STi or EVO is going to smoke you. those motors make 300hp stock...you're going to have some work to do to get a Protege motor pumping 300hp...Sure, turbo is nice, but can you control it? Who's going to tune it? HOw streetable will it be?

Good luck... sounds like a one of a kind protege... due to the cost of the car, the build, labor, fabrication, etc.. id go out and buy an awd car.. But thats me.
Thats 99% of people, too.....

Props dude for being different and giving the finger to those who constantly say 'no you cant' (thumb)

STI's are 230hp...EVO's make more but both cars weigh a lot more than the Pro5 even with the AWD weight. Bridges have to be crossed when we get there. Hiboost makes 250+ hp at 12psi. A built motor with EMS should be able to handle 18-20 lbs daily. I'm no math genius, but that ought to get me in the ballpark.

Who cares how much its going to cost, damnit, stfu Turbo Matty. someone is DOING something and all you can do is talk it down like its a waste of money. ******* hell....whatever

does no'one else think this can't be done for under $6K??? I'm all for originality and what-not, but why throw this kind of money into a sub-$15K car?? You'll have more traction and driveline strength than any other protege ever, but you'll need to dump another couple of grand into building the motor, then tuning it.

If you have the bankroll to allow this and you think it'sa good investment then more power to you. I just can't believe no'one else has said anything about insanely expensive this is going to get. There was a time when I first owned my MSP that I had an extra $5K to dump into my car...I looked into the AWD idea but QUICKLY turned away. It will have so many hidden costs and un-planned problems that you'll be knee-deep in under a week!

Have confidence in the dude. I am sure its going to cost him an arm and a leg but its a hobby.. so therefore dont think of it as a "worthwhile" investment on paper. He will have the first AWD 3rd gen in the US... Thats worth it enough for me. Just like your pinto isnt a worthwhile investment on paper.. I am sure to you it was worth it to make a POS car go that fast.. I think dumping 6-7k between a Pino and a Protege - most would choose the Protege.

I wasnt going to say it like that because supposidly I am the only one that sees negative notations in all of mattys posts, and therefore he wants to kill me or something dumb like that.. but trust me.. I felt like saying it like that. (evil)

Don't worry guys. I've already estimated an easy $10K for this project just to get the car up to WRX standards and then at least another $5K in tuning to milk it for all it's worth. Here is some of the reasoning behind this. My car has 90,000 miles on it. The motor and the tranny are on the downhill, but the interior and body of the car are fine. Why replace them with the same old thing. I don't have a problem leaving the car in the garage for 6-12 monthes as I have another Mazda to drive. My warranty was up ages ago and I'm so upside down in the payments that I can't trade it in on a new car. I'm so anxious to get the car in the garage and strip it down. It's been weeks since I've worked on it and it's driving me crazy.

ur my hero.....so uniqe, i have to say ull have the 1st Sport20 in the states.
ive been thinking of the same thing as u but i dont have a buged to work w/ so im SOL. so id just get an STi...my wetdeam

good luck with this project, if i had 10k laying around i might have looked into it myself...
I talked to Corksport today and the only thing they were waiting on was a driveshaft that wasn't bent, but I told them to just ship the bent one from Japan along with everything else that we are waiting on since I'm having new shafts made anyway. Believe me this won't be finished anytime soon. I don't even expect to have the transmission in my hands until the end of next month. Got to be patient.

ur def. taking one for the home team....but make sure to keep ur car looking stock just so u can smoke a ZO6 and have the guy s*** his pants....like my friends turbo civic w/ 20k in engine work alone...to bad it got stolen. have to mention his civic was a 1993 w/ rust on the hood and a killer b18c1 w/ a t3/t4 kicking everythings ass....12psi+EG civic= 350hp that whould smoke anything

I plan on running my stock rims and tires while I'm making my money back. No need for big sticky tires when they all pull.

also do u have any aftermarket parts ur willing to sell sense u wont need 1/2 ur car anmore?
springs...swaybars...headers?

ur the best...lol

what ecu are u running?
Waiting to see what Perfworks is doing with the AEM, looks like the best bet at the moment. I want a full standalone and the AEM looks the most promising at the moment. By the time I get to that stage in the game there should be a couple of options out.

There will be several things coming off, but not a whole lot. I really don't have a lot of stuff done. I'm still not sure what is going to happen with the rear suspension so no promises until then.

The AWD Capella is a manual shift where as the AWD Familia was only offered in an automatic. Even if I didn't mind driving an auto tranny it would still never be able to hold the HP #'s that I want to get when I'm finished.

I don't know who told you that, but the Sport 20 did have all-wheel-drive in a manual tranny.

TheMAN found that out during research...

so aside from all the stupid Matty-bashing....something I thought was hillarious was XelderX saying the STi only makes 230hp and the EVO makes more than that. That's great. Obviously you've done your research. Kudo's.

Dexter, get your head out of your ass. Calm down. Take my initial posts at face value. I only said "Does anyone else find this projects cost to outweigh it's benefits?". If that's being too rough or rude than you can take your pansy-ass to San Fransisco and get yourself a "queer eye" to listen to you b****. Seriously, you "men" are so damned sensative about every ******* thing.

ELEmental, I never said I wanted to kill you.....I just can't wait to "bump" into you to see if your mouth is this big in person. I'm not about killing. I think everyone has a purpose. Some peoples only purpose is to pay taxes and take up space though.

XelderX, seriously, good luck with your project. The reason I spent so much on my car was because it was new ground I was breaking. I got to see first hand all of the hidden costs that go into something like this. I also started working on this project in 1997 and it's been "nickle & diming" ever since. I never spent $6-7K in one sitting or just in parts acqusition. It was all trial and error. What ever you budget for this plan on tripling it. I'm only trying to save you from the same mistakes I've made already.

As for the comment of who would choose a pinto over a protege?? My car was set up for drag racing and at that it is a champ. You ask any drag racer what they'd rather have...

a 2.0L turbo or a 2.5L turbo

AWD or RWD

stick or automatic (w/ shift kit)

5door wagon body or 2 door roadster

3000+ lbs or 2100lbs +driver

I built my car for drag racing and in doing such it's specs are geared toward that. It sounds like
