Aux In Fried 2 Radios now!

Ok now this is pissing me off. I bought the $79.95 pie Mazda to alpine adapter, and as I said in another thread (http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=79589&highlight=fried), my radio started smoking and then stopped working after I plugged in the adapter. I had initially thought I had freid it by allowing two stripped speaker wires to touch, but it turns out this was not the case at all. My first radio stopped giving sound to the speakers, and I was forced to buy a new radio from another member.

When the new radio came today I plugged in the adapter after I checked to make sure all wires were taped up and there were no bare wires that could potentially touch each other. I plugged in the pie adapter and turned the radio on (while crossing my fingers)....and my new radio started smoking like the other one did. Fortunately I turned off the car fast enough this time to disconnect the adapter and save my new radio, but I am now sure that the adapter caused my first radio to fry.

What should I do? I ordered it through logjamelectronics.com, who has a 15% restocking fee for returns, but I don't think I should have to pay that since the adapter doesn't work correctly, and I think I should also be reimbursed the money I spent on the new radio since it fried my old one. Any ideas? I'm thinking about calling P.I.E. and I'll even send them my radio to prove it was fried.....this is ridiculous......fortunately crutchfield won't make me pay to return their pie adapter to rca cable....

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.....and to anyone with a p5...be careful buying this adapter!

Thanks!

I just sent logjamelectronics and P.I.E. e-mails. I think I deserve to not pay a restocking fee for the P.I.E. adapter, and I thin either logjamelectronics.com or P.I.E. should pay for the radio I had to replace....we'll have to wait I guess. Crutchfield was very nice about returning the rca to P.I.E. adpter cord....they already had a return label in the box with my order, and the rep was very nice on the phone...I wish more companies would be like crutchfield...I'll keep you updated on what happens when I get a replies back from the companies.

Thanks!

umm your radio shouldn't smoke because of a power issue, thats odd... fuse... wtf.
pics of adapter?

It's the P.I.E. adapter here: http://store.yahoo.com/logjam/piemazpcalp.html .
My radio definetily smoked, and when I took it out, I could see through the holes in the metal at the bottom of the radio that an area was recently burned (charred). It happened twice, so it definetily was the adapter, and it doesn't smoke if the adapter isn't connected.

What were you hooking to the adapter? Using it as an aux. input? or a CD Changer input?

It says it only works as an aux port on the MPVs

Actually, it says right on the package that the adapteris compatible with the "2003-2004 Protege5". See the attatched picture for proof. And in the "aux input is on it's way" thread people said this worked for them in their p5's. I think my adapter was defective. And I was planning to try the rca cable plugged into it, however, this cable wasn't plugged into the adapter when I first turned on the radio, only the P.I.E. adapter in this box.

Here's the reply I got back from Logjamelectronics.com today:

Hi Matt,

Thank you for contacting us. First, let me say that you must be REALLY, REALLY unfortunate! We have been selling these adapters in large quantities for several years, and have NEVER heard of this happening. We mean THOUSANDS of them and no smoked radios! We are truly sorry to learn of this. As we have heard of no compatibility issues in your vehicle, we must assume that your adapter is simply defective. If you would like a replacement, we can get one right out to you. If you prefer a refund, just return your adapter to us, as per the instructions we included with your order. We really do feel terrible that this happened, but we are unable to cover your cost for the replacement radio. This is just not something that is done. We also cannot expect PIE to do this for you. If you read the disclaimers included with the adapters, and pretty much every piece of consumer electronics equipment sold today, the manufacturers all address this. Please let us know if you would like to try another adapter, and well get one right out to you. If not, just send that one back to us, and well get you a refund ASAP.<O:p</O:p

<O:p</O:pThank you,<O:p</O:p

I'm still waiting for a reply from P.I.E., but I sent an e-mail back to this company asking for at least a $40 store credit to cover the radio's cost. I'll just have to wait to see if I get anything from P.I.E. or logjamelectronics.com like I deserve. I will be sending the adapter back for a full refund...I'm not taking any more chances risking my cd player.

Thanks!

too bad you didn't call them straight off, i bet they would have given you whatever the cost is for a new radio from mazda... PIE should be the one paying you for the radio tho, not the site. i used to deal with car audio crap like this all the time at my old job.

I got e-mails back from both companies now. Logjam e-mailed me a day before P.I.E. and told me to send the adapter back for a full refund (no restocking fee), and that they won't cover the radio, but they would consider giving me store credit if there's something I want from them (I can't really find anything I want from them though...oh well...). P.I.E. e-mailed me and said they will be getting the part from logjam and they'll have me send them my radio when they are ready to test it. They said if it wasn't my fault they'd cover the radio and shipping fees. We'll see what happens....at this point I'm only down $40.....not too bad, but it would be nice to get that back...

How are you so sure that the adapter you received isn't defective?
Umm please take the time to read my posts above....I said I think it's defective, I never said once that I thought it wasn't defective.

that's good man, it's good to hear that some companies are actually being accountable for their products. :)
