auto to 5spd conversion questions

I have an 89 rx7 convertible automatic that I am thinking of converting
to a 5spd. The auto trans is junk and is boring. I know some of the
basics of what will need to be done but have questions on the ecm. will
it need changed out, can it be reprogrammed/chip changed etc. I'm
sure there are other things i can't imagine at this point that will come up.
Can anyone advise on this? good idea/bad idea? More trouble than it's
worth? Thanks in advance.

ive done auto to man tranny swaps. Theres all kind of things to think about. Clutch pedal placement, getting a stick in, and literally ripping the whole front of the car apart. I suggest finding some local guys through forums that can help you.

thanks for your input. knew there would be alot to it but have never
done it before. Might be more than I want to try although would be nice
to say I did it. appreciate the advice.

I did the swapp a month back or so and it was definetly a lot of work but it is doable. i picked up a second car tho, it was smashed in the front and i had all the parts i needed right there next to my car. it took me a good month or two to get all the parts that i needed. If you've had a trans out of one of these before and you have all the parts already out of the donor car it can be done in a day. It takes me about 7 hours. I have a lift though. It's always a good idea to get rid of a slushbox... I don't think anyone has ever regretted it afterward.
